आई॰ एस॰ जौहर का जन्म 16 फरवरी 1920 को तालगंगा, पंजाब, ब्रिटिश भारत (पाकिस्तान में है) हुआ था. इनका पूरा नाम इंदरजीत सिंह जौहर है. उन्होंने इकॉनमिक्स और पॉलिटिक्स में एमए किया था. वर्ष 1947 में देश के विभाजन के वक्त वो परिवार के साथ एक शादी में पटियाला आए हुए थे. तभी लाहौर में दंगे हो गए. वो वापस नहीं जा सके. परिवार दिल्ली आ गया. बाद में वो बंबई (अब मुंबई) चले गए.
साठ और सत्तर के दशक में बॉलीवुड में कुछ ऐसे आर्टिस्ट थे जो हर फिल्म में नजर आ जाते थे. बताते चलें कि फिल्म ‘शागिर्द’ में जिस बूढ़े के उपर फिल्माया गया गाना ‘बड़े मियां दीवाने ऐसे ना बनो’…वो बुढा जौहर ही थे. जौहर ने वर्ष 1956 से 1982 तक हिंदी फिल्मों में किए अपने कॉमिक रोल्स के कारण लोगों के दिमाग में आज भी जिंदा हैं.
जौहर ने हिंदी फिल्मों के अलावा हॉलीवुड फिल्म ‘हैरी ब्लैक’, ‘लॉरेंस ऑफ अरेबिया’ और अमेरिकी टीवी सीरीज ‘माया’ में भी काम किया था. वर्ष 1952 में पार्टीशन पर एक बेहतरीन फिल्म बनाई ‘नास्तिक’ जिसे उन्होंने लिखा, डायरेक्ट किया और इसमें काम भी किया था. महमूद के साथ मिलकर ‘जौहर महमूद इन गोवा’ और ‘जौहर महमूद इन हॉन्गकॉन्ग’ भी बनाई. बॉब होप और बिंग क्रॉस्बी की फिल्मों से प्रेरित थी ये दोनों फिल्में. ‘मेरा नाम जौहर’ भी फिल्म बनाई. और भी कई फिल्में बनाईं जिनमें अपना नाम जोड़ा.वर्ष 1971 में इनको ‘जॉनी मेरा नाम’ के लिए बेस्ट कॉमेडियन का अवॉर्ड भी मिला था. बताते चलें कि, वर्ष 1975 में देश में इमरजेंसी लागू करने के कारण जौहर प्रधानमंत्री श्रीमती इंदिरा गांधी के कट्टर विरोधी हो गये और उनकी नीतियों का मज़ाक उड़ाने वाली फिल्म ‘नसबंदी’ बनायी.खूब चर्चा हुई। सरकार ने इसे प्रतिबंधित कर दिया.
जौहर की फिल्में भले ही क्लास जैन्ट्री ने नापसंद की हों मगर उनके हास्य के टाईमिंग और चुटीले संवादों का लोहा सभी ने माना.उनकी हिट और चर्चित फिल्मों में अफ़साना, श्रीमती जी, नास्तिक, हम सब चोर हैं, बेवकूफ, तीन देवियां, अप्रेल फूल, दिल ने फिर याद किया है, शागिर्द, पवित्र पापी, सफ़र, अनीता, राज, जोशीला, रूप तेरा मस्ताना, ख़लीफ़ा, एक मुट्ठी आसमान, प्रेम शास्त्र, आज की ताज़ा खबर, प्रियतमा, साहेब बहादुर, दो नंबर के अमीर, छोटी बहू, बढ़ती का नाम दाढ़ी, दास्तान, तांगे वाला, बनारसी बाबू, गंगा की सौगंध, त्रिमूर्ति, गोपीचंद जासूस, तीसरी आंख.

I.S.Johar was born on 16 February 1920 in Talganga, Punjab, British India (now in Pakistan). His full name is Inderjit Singh Johar. He did MA in Economics and Politics. During the partition of the country in the year 1947, he had come to Patiala with his family for a wedding. Then there were riots in Lahore. He could not go back. The family shifted to Delhi. Later he moved to Bombay (now Mumbai).
In the sixties and seventies, there were some artists in Bollywood who were seen in every film. Let us tell you that the old man on whom the song ‘Bade Miyan Deewane Aise Na Bano’ was filmed in the film ‘Shagird’…he was old Johar. Johar is still alive in the minds of people because of his comic roles in Hindi films from 1956 to 1982.
Apart from Hindi films, Johar also worked in Hollywood films ‘Harry Black’, ‘Lawrence of Arabia’ and the American TV series ‘Maya’. In the year 1952, he made a great film ‘Nastik’ on Partition, which he wrote, directed, and also worked on it. Together with Mehmood, ‘Johar Mehmood in Goa’ and ‘Johar Mehmood in Hong Kong’ were also made. Both these films were inspired by the films of Bob Hope and Bing Crosby. The film ‘Mera Naam Johar’ was also made. Made many more films to which he added his name. In the year 1971, he also received the Best Comedian Award for ‘Johnny Mera Naam’. Let us tell you that, due to the imposition of an Emergency in the country in the year 1975, Johar became a staunch opponent of Prime Minister Mrs. Indira Gandhi and made a film ‘Nasbandi’ making fun of her policies. There were a lot of discussions. The government banned it.
Johar’s films may have been disliked by the class gentry, but his comic timing and witty dialogues were admired by all.
