धरती पर प्रमुख रूप से कुल 5 महासागर हैं: – प्रशांत महासागर, अटलांटिक महासागर, हिन्द महासागर, आर्कटिक महासागर तथा दक्षिणी महासागर. इसके अलावा कैस्पियन सागर, मृत सागर, लाल सागर, उत्तर सागर, लापतेव सागर, भूमध्य सागर के साथ-साथ दो (02) प्रमुख खाड़ियां भी हैं – बंगाल की खाड़ी और अरब की खाड़ी.

शंख का महत्व: – शंख समुद्र मंथन के समय प्राप्त 14 अनमोल रत्नों में से एक है. लक्ष्मी के साथ उत्पन्न होने के कारण इसे ‘लक्ष्मी भ्राता’ भी कहा जाता है. यही कारण है कि, जिस घर में शंख होता है, वहां लक्ष्मी का वास होता है. घर में शंख जरूर रखें. शंख के कई उपयोग और महत्व हैं. शंख बजाने से जहां सेहत में लाभ मिलता है और घर का वातावरण शुद्ध होता है वहीं इसके घर में रखे रहने से आयुष्य प्राप्ति, लक्ष्मी प्राप्ति, पुत्र प्राप्ति, पितृदोष शांति, विवाह आदि की रुकावट भी दूर होती है. इसके अलावा शंख कई चमत्कारिक लाभ के लिए भी जाना जाता है. उच्च श्रेणी के श्रेष्ठ शंख कैलाश मानसरोवर, मालद्वीप, लक्षद्वीप, कोरामंडल द्वीप समूह, श्रीलंका एवं भारत में पाए जाते हैं.
वैसे शंख तो कई पाए जाते हैं लेकिन पाञ्चजन्य शंख मिलना मुश्किल है. समुद्र मंथन के दौरान इस शंख की उत्पत्ति हुई थी. 14 रत्नों में से एक पाञ्चजन्य शंख को माना गया है. शंख को विजय, समृद्धि, सुख, शांति, यश, कीर्ति और लक्ष्मी का प्रतीक माना गया है. सबसे महत्वपूर्ण यह कि शंख ‘नाद’ का प्रतीक है. शंख ध्वनि शुभ मानी गई है. वर्ष 1928 में बर्लिन यूनिवर्सिटी ने शंख ध्वनि का अनुसंधान करके यह सिद्ध किया कि इसकी ध्वनि कीटाणुओं को नष्ट करने की उत्तम औषधि है.
शंख 3 प्रकार के होते हैं :- दक्षिणावृत्ति शंख, मध्यावृत्ति शंख तथा वामावृत्ति शंख. इनके अलावा लक्ष्मी शंख, गोमुखी शंख, कामधेनु शंख, विष्णु शंख, देव शंख, चक्र शंख, पौंड्र शंख, सुघोष शंख, गरूड़ शंख, मणिपुष्पक शंख, राक्षस शंख, शनि शंख, राहु शंख, केतु शंख, शेषनाग शंख, कच्छप शंख आदि प्रकार के होते हैं.
शिवलिंग और शालिग्राम: – शिवलिंग जहां भगवान शंकर का प्रतीक है, तो शालिग्राम भगवान विष्णु का. शिवलिंग की तरह शालिग्राम भी बहुत दुर्लभ है. अधिकतर शालिग्राम नेपाल के मुक्तिनाथ, काली गंडकी नदी के तट पर पाया जाता है. काले और भूरे शालिग्राम के अलावा सफेद, नीले और ज्योतियुक्त शालिग्राम का पाया जाना तो और भी दुर्लभ है. पूर्ण शालिग्राम में भगवान विष्णु के चक्र की आकृति अंकित होती है. शालिग्राम कई प्रकार के होते हैं. दोनों ही के घर में रहने से घर की ऊर्जा सकारात्मक रहती है और जीवन में शांति बनी रहती है.
मणि और नग: – कौस्तुभ मणि भी समुद्र मंथन के दौरान निकली थी. नग या मणि में फर्क होता है. दोनों ही समुद्र के रत्न हैं. प्रमुख मणियां 9 मानी जाती हैं- घृत मणि, तैल मणि, भीष्मक मणि, उपलक मणि, स्फटिक मणि, पारस मणि, उलूक मणि, लाजावर्त मणि, मासर मणि. मणि एक प्रकार का चमकता हुआ पत्थर होता है. मणि को हीरे की श्रेणी में रखा जा सकता है. उक्त सभी मणियां समुद्र या नदियों के अलावा खदानों से उत्पन्न होती है. ये सभी चमत्कारिक रूप से लाभ प्रदान करती हैं. प्रत्येक मणि अलग-अलग कार्य में काम आती है. किसी जानकार से पूछकर ही इनमें से किसी मणि को अपने पास रखना चाहिए.
समुद्रीवनस्पतियां:-
समुद्री शैवाल: – शैवाल मुख्यत: 3 प्रकार की होती है. शैवाल का उपयोग औषधि, व्यवसाय और भोजन के रूप में किया जाता है. इसमें कुछ जहरीली शैवाल भी होती है. क्लोरेला नामक शैवाल को कैबिन के हौज में उगाकर अंतरिक्ष यात्री को प्रोटीनयुक्त भोजन, जल और ऑक्सीजन सभी प्राप्त हो सकते हैं.
सिवार (kelp): – यह एक प्रकार की समुद्री वनस्पति है. समुद्र की गहराइयों में इस वनस्पति के जंगल के जंगल विद्यमान हैं. यह भी शैवाल की तरह बहुउपयोगी है परन्तु यह अमरबेल की तरह होती है. जब तक यह पानी में रहेगी, यह कभी नष्ट नहीं होगी और न सड़ेगी.
मोती और मूंगा: – समुद्र से पाए जाने वाला एक महत्वपूर्ण रत्न मोती कई प्रकार का होता है. असली और प्रभावयुक्त मोती पहनने से जीवन में शांति स्थापित होती है. उसी तरह मूंगा भी एक चमत्कारिक नग है. यह भी समुद्र में बहुतायत में पाया जाता है. मंगल राशि के लोगों को मूंगा पहनने की सलाह दी जाती है जबकि सामान्यत: चंद्रमा क्षीण होने पर मोती पहनने की सलाह दी जाती है. मान्यताओं के अनुसार मोती का एक कार्य ‘धन और समृद्धि’ के द्वार खोलना भी है.
शांति के लिए मोती: – किसी भी प्रकार से धन प्राप्ति में आ रही रुकावट को दूर करने के लिए मोती भी उत्तम उपाय माना गया है. दरअसल, इसके पहनने से मन में सकारात्मक विचार उत्पन्न होते हैं. सही स्वरूप का मोती धारण करने से ही अपेक्षित लाभ प्राप्त होते हैं अन्यथा कई ऐसे उदाहरण सामने आते हैं कि मोती धारण किया, परंतु कोई फर्क का अहसास नहीं हुआ. गोल आकार का मोती उत्तम प्रकार का होता है. मोती आकार में लंबा तथा गोल हो एवं उसके मध्य भाग में आकाश के रंग जैसा वलयाकार, अर्द्ध चंद्राकार चिह्न हो तो ऐसा मोती धारण करने से धारणकर्ता को उत्तम पुत्र की प्राप्ति होती है. मोती यदि आकार में एक ओर अणीदार हो तथा दूसरी ओर से चपटा हो तथा उसका रंग सहज आकाश के रंग की तरह हो तो ऐसा मोती धारण करने से धारणकर्ता के धन में वृद्धि होती है. गोल आकार का पीले रंग का मोती हो तो ऐसा मोती धारण करने से धारणकर्ता विद्वान होता है.
साहस के लिए मूंगा: – मूंगा मंगल का रत्न है. मंगल साहस, बल, ऊर्जा का कारक है. वहीँ, दूसरी ओर यदि आप मूंगा धारण करना चाहते हैं तो मूंगे की सही परख करने के लिए मूंगे पर एक बूंद पानी की टपकाएं, फिर देखें पानी रुकेगा नहीं. अगर पानी उस पर रुक जाए तो वह असली मूंगा नहीं होता. पुखराज, मोती, माणिक के साथ पहन सकते हैं.
