विश्व कछुआ दिवस हर वर्ष 23 मई को मनाया जाता है. इस दिन का उद्देश्य कछुओं और उनके आवासों की रक्षा के लिए जागरूकता बढ़ाना है.
विश्व कछुआ दिवस की शुरुआत वर्ष 2000 में ‘अमेरिकन टॉर्टोइज रेस्क्यू’ नामक संगठन ने की थी. यह संगठन कछुओं और कछुओं की विभिन्न प्रजातियों के बचाव एवं संरक्षण के लिए काम करता है. कछुए प्राचीन काल से धरती पर मौजूद हैं और प्राकृतिक पारिस्थितिकी तंत्र के संतुलन में महत्वपूर्ण भूमिका निभाते हैं. लेकिन जलवायु परिवर्तन, अवैध व्यापार, आवासीय क्षति और प्रदूषण के कारण कई प्रजातियाँ विलुप्ति के कगार पर हैं.
समुद्री कछुए समुद्री घास के मैदानों को स्वस्थ रखते हैं, जिससे समुद्री जीवों को संतुलित आवास मिलता है. स्थलीय कछुए मिट्टी की उर्वरता को बनाए रखते हैं और जैव विविधता को बढ़ावा देते हैं. कछुए विभिन्न पारिस्थितिक तंत्रों का हिस्सा होते हैं और खाद्य श्रृंखला को संतुलित करते हैं.
समुद्र के जलस्तर में वृद्धि और मौसम के बदलाव से कछुओं के जीवन चक्र प्रभावित होते हैं. जंगलों की कटाई और समुद्री प्रदूषण कछुओं के आवास को नुकसान पहुँचाते हैं. कई देशों में कछुओं को पालतू जानवर, भोजन, या औषधीय प्रयोगों के लिए पकड़ लिया जाता है.
कई संगठनों द्वारा कछुओं के संरक्षण के लिए विशेष अभयारण्यों की स्थापना की गई है वहीं, कई देशों में कछुओं की अवैध तस्करी और शिकार को रोकने के लिए सख्त कानून भी बनाए गए हैं.
सनातन धर्म में भी कछुए का विशेष महत्व है. इसे भगवान विष्णु के कूर्म अवतार के रूप में माना जाता है, जिन्होंने समुद्र मंथन के दौरान मंदार पर्वत को अपने खोल पर धारण किया था.
विश्व कछुआ दिवस केवल एक उत्सव नहीं, बल्कि प्रकृति को बचाने की दिशा में उठाया गया महत्वपूर्ण कदम है. हमारी छोटी-छोटी कोशिशें भी इन अद्भुत जीवों के भविष्य को सुरक्षित करने में महत्वपूर्ण योगदान दे सकती हैं.

World Turtle Day is celebrated every year on 23 May. The purpose of this day is to raise awareness about protecting turtles and their habitats.
World Turtle Day was started in 2000 by an organisation called ‘American Tortoise Rescue’. This organization works for the rescue and conservation of various species of turtles and tortoises. Turtles have existed on Earth since ancient times and play an important role in the balance of the natural ecosystem. But due to climate change, illegal trade, habitat loss and pollution, many species are on the verge of extinction.
Sea turtles keep sea grass meadows healthy, providing a balanced habitat for marine organisms. Terrestrial turtles maintain soil fertility and promote biodiversity. Turtles are part of various ecosystems and balance the food chain.
Rise in sea level and weather changes affect the life cycle of turtles. Deforestation and marine pollution harm the habitat of turtles. In many countries, turtles are caught as pets, food, or for medicinal experiments.
Special sanctuaries have been established by many organizations for the protection of turtles, while strict laws have also been made in many countries to prevent illegal smuggling and hunting of turtles.
The turtle also has special significance in Sanatan Dharma. It is considered the Kurma incarnation of Lord Vishnu, who held the Mandara mountain on its shell during the Samudra Manthan.
World Turtle Day is not just a celebration, but an important step taken towards saving nature. Even our small efforts can contribute significantly to securing the future of these amazing creatures.
