World Rural Women’s Day

International Day of Rural Women is celebrated every year on 15 October. The purpose of this day is to recognise the contribution of women living in rural areas and highlight their rights, challenges, and the important contribution they make to their socio-economic development.

This day promotes efforts to improve the condition of rural women, protect their rights and empower them socio-economically. This day highlights the contribution of women in rural areas, who play an important role in farming, family care, food security and conservation of natural resources.

Rural women are associated with agriculture and farming and handle a significant part of food production in many parts of the world. Without their contribution, achieving the goal of food security and agricultural productivity is difficult. Rural women often face many challenges such as poverty, discrimination, lack of health facilities, access to education, and gender inequality. This day draws attention to these issues and seeks to promote policies and schemes to improve the condition of rural women.

The United Nations General Assembly officially recognized this day in the year 2007.
