विश्व पोलियो दिवस (World Polio Day) हर वर्ष 24 अक्टूबर को मनाया जाता है. इसका उद्देश्य पोलियो उन्मूलन के प्रयासों के प्रति जागरूकता फैलाना और इस दिशा में हो रही प्रगति के बारे में जानकारी देना है. यह दिन विशेष रूप से इस भयंकर रोग को समाप्त करने के लिए किए जा रहे वैश्विक प्रयासों को मान्यता देने और पोलियो मुक्त दुनिया की ओर काम करने के महत्व को उजागर करने के लिए समर्पित है.
पोलियो (पोलियोमायलाइटिस) एक संक्रामक रोग है जो बच्चों को मुख्य रूप से प्रभावित करता है और उनका तंत्रिका तंत्र नुकसान पहुंचाकर स्थायी विकलांगता या मृत्यु का कारण बन सकता है. हालांकि, टीकाकरण कार्यक्रमों की सफलता के कारण, अब यह बीमारी लगभग पूरी दुनिया से समाप्त हो चुकी है, लेकिन कुछ देशों में अभी भी पोलियो के मामले सामने आते हैं.
इस दिवस की शुरुआत रोटरी इंटरनेशनल ने की थी, जिसने वर्ष 1985 में “पोलियो प्लस” नामक अभियान शुरू किया. इस अभियान का उद्देश्य विश्व भर में पोलियो को खत्म करना था, और बाद में इसमें अन्य अंतर्राष्ट्रीय स्वास्थ्य संगठनों, जैसे विश्व स्वास्थ्य संगठन (WHO) और यूनिसेफ ने भी भाग लिया.
हर वर्ष 24 अक्टूबर को यह दिवस इसलिए मनाया जाता है, क्योंकि यह पोलियो वैक्सीन के आविष्कारक डॉ. जोनास साल्क का जन्मदिन भी है, जिन्होंने पोलियो वायरस के खिलाफ पहली सफल वैक्सीन विकसित की थी.

World Polio Day
World Polio Day is celebrated every year on 24 October. Its purpose is to spread awareness about the efforts to eradicate polio and to give information about the progress being made in this direction. This day is specially dedicated to recognizing the global efforts being made to end this dreaded disease and to highlight the importance of working towards a polio-free world.
Polio (poliomyelitis) is an infectious disease that mainly affects children and can cause permanent disability or death by damaging their nervous system. Although, due to the success of vaccination programs, this disease has now been almost eradicated from the whole world, cases of polio are still reported in some countries.
This day was started by Rotary International, which started a campaign called “Polio Plus” in the year 1985. This campaign aimed to eliminate polio worldwide, and later other international health organizations, such as the World Health Organization (WHO) and UNICEF, also participated in it.
This day is celebrated every year on October 24 because it is also the birthday of Dr. Jonas Salk, the inventor of the polio vaccine, who developed the first successful vaccine against the polio virus.
On World Polio Day, various programs and campaigns are organized by health organizations and community groups around the world to spread awareness about polio so that this disease can be completely eradicated.
