हर वर्ष 23 अप्रैल को विश्व पुस्तक एवं कॉपीराइट दिवस को मनाया जाता है. यह दिवस पुस्तकों के महत्व, लेखकों के अधिकारों और बौद्धिक संपदा की सुरक्षा के प्रति जागरूकता फैलाने के लिए समर्पित है. संयुक्त राष्ट्र शैक्षिक, वैज्ञानिक एवं सांस्कृतिक संगठन (UNESCO) ने 1995 में इस दिवस की स्थापना की थी.
विश्व पुस्तक एवं कॉपीराइट दिवस की तिथि का चयन इसलिए किया गया क्योंकि यह विलियम शेक्सपियर और मिगुएल डे सर्वांतेस जैसे महान लेखकों की पुण्यतिथि है. यह दिन साहित्य और ज्ञान के क्षेत्र में उनके योगदान को याद करने का अवसर प्रदान करता है.
पुस्तकें मानव सभ्यता की सबसे बड़ी धरोहर हैं. ये ज्ञान, संस्कृति, इतिहास और विज्ञान का संग्रह होती हैं. वर्तमान समय के डिजिटल युग में पढ़ने की आदत कम हो रही है. इस दिवस के माध्यम से लोगों को पुस्तकों से जोड़ने का प्रयास किया जाता है. पुस्तकों के माध्यम से समाज को नई दिशा देने वाले लेखकों और प्रकाशकों के योगदान को सराहा जाता है. वहीं, स्कूलों और पुस्तकालयों में भी विशेष कार्यक्रम आयोजित किए जाते हैं ताकि नई पीढ़ी पढ़ने के लिए प्रेरित हों.
कॉपीराइट का अर्थ है “रचनात्मक कार्यों पर लेखकों का अधिकार”. यह लेखकों, कवियों, संगीतकारों, कलाकारों और अन्य रचनाकारों को उनके मौलिक कार्यों पर स्वामित्व प्रदान करता है. कॉपीराइट दिवस का उद्देश्य है कि , लेखकों की मेहनत की चोरी न हो. रचनाकारों को उनके काम का उचित पारिश्रमिक मिलेगा, तो वे और बेहतर कार्य करेंगे. कॉपीराइट का मुख्य उद्देश्य है कि, रचनाओं की अवैध प्रतियां बनाने और बेचने पर रोक लगाना.
हर वर्ष पुस्तक दिवस पर एक थीम का चुनाव होता है. वर्ष 2023 का थीम था “पढ़ो, बढ़ो, फैलाओ” (Read, Grow, Spread).

World Book and Copyright Day is celebrated every year on 23 April. This day is dedicated to spreading awareness about the importance of books, the rights of authors and the protection of intellectual property. The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) was established on this day in 1995.
The date of World Book and Copyright Day was chosen because it is the death anniversary of great writers like William Shakespeare and Miguel de Cervantes. This day provides an opportunity to remember their contribution in the field of literature and knowledge.
Books are the greatest heritage of human civilisation. They are a collection of knowledge, culture, history and science. In the current digital age, the habit of reading is decreasing. To this day, an attempt is made to connect people with books. The contribution of authors and publishers who give a new direction to society through books is appreciated. At the same time, special programs are also organised in schools and libraries so that the new generation is inspired to read.
Copyright means “authors’ rights on creative works”. It gives authors, poets, musicians, artists and other creators ownership over their original works. The purpose of Copyright Day is that the hard work of the authors should not be stolen. If the creators get proper remuneration for their work, then they will do better work. The main purpose of copyright is to stop making and selling illegal copies of the works.
Every year, a theme is chosen for Book Day. The theme of the year 2023 was “Read, Grow, Spread”.
The purpose of World Book and Copyright Day is not only to underline the importance of books, but also to ensure that the rights of authors and creators are protected.
