Dharmendra, also known as “He-Man” and “Dharamji,” symbolized an era in Indian cinema history where acting wasn’t just about dialogue or style, but rather a combination of simplicity of life, depth of emotion, and strength of personality. He ruled the hearts of audiences for over six decades.
Dharmendra Singh Deol was born on December 8, 1935, in Nasrali village in Ludhiana district, Punjab. The son of a school headmaster, he spent his childhood in simplicity. His passion for films, which from an early age drew him to Mumbai, the city of dreams, leaving his job as a clerk. His early life was filled with struggles. He reportedly had to sleep outside garages and take on low-paying jobs in search of work.
In 1960, he got his first break in Bollywood with the film Dil Bhi Tera Hum Bhi Tere, where he earned the new name “Dharmendra.” In his early days, Dharmendra established himself with serious and romantic roles. In 1966, the film Phool Aur Patthar established him as an action hero and brought him major box office success. Other notable films include Mamta (1966), Anupama (1966), and Satyakam (1969), for which he received a Filmfare Best Actor nomination and is considered one of his finest.
The 1970s and 1980s were the golden era of Dharmendra’s career. He established himself in all three genres: action, comedy, and drama. This timeless 1975 film by Ramesh Sippy remains a milestone in the history of Indian cinema. His character of Veeru and his dialogues (such as, “Basanti, don’t dance in front of these dogs”) became iconic. The 1977 film Dharam Veer further cemented his image as a “He-Man.” His pairing with Hema Malini in the 1972 film Sita Aur Geeta was a box office hit. The 1975 film Chupke, a cult classic, showcases his impeccable timing.
In 1987, he set an incredible record by delivering seven hits in a single year, a testament to his immense popularity and the trust of producers and directors. He appeared in over 300 films, including 93 hits and 49 superhits.
Even in the new century, he remained active with his sons, Sunny Deol and Bobby Deol, in films like “Apne” (2007) and the “Yamla Pagla Deewana” series. Recently, he played a poignant role in “Rocky Aur Rani Ki Prem Kahani” (2023), for which he received widespread acclaim from audiences and critics.
