सुलक्षणा पंडित का जन्म 12 जुलाई 1954 को रायगढ़, मध्य प्रदेश को एक प्रतिष्ठित संगीत घराने में हुआ था. वह महान शास्त्रीय गायक पंडित जसराज की भतीजी थीं. उनके पिता, प्रताप नारायण पंडित, भी एक कुशल शास्त्रीय गायक थे. ऐसे माहौल में पली-बढ़ी सुलक्षणा ने मात्र 9 वर्ष की उम्र में ही गाना शुरू कर दिया था. उनकी मधुर और मखमली आवाज़ ने उन्हें बहुत जल्द ही पार्श्व गायन में पहचान दिलाई. वर्ष 1975 में फिल्म ‘संकल्प’ के गीत ‘तू ही सागर है तू ही किनारा’ से उन्हें व्यापक पहचान मिली थी.
सुलक्षणा ने वर्ष 1975 में फिल्म ‘उलझन’ से अभिनय कैरियर की शुरुआत की, जिसमें उनके नायक थे संजीव कुमार। उन्होंने ‘फकीरा’, ‘अपनापन’, ‘खानदान’, ‘हेरा फेरी’ जैसी फिल्मों में काम किया, जहाँ उनकी सादगी और भावनात्मक अभिनय ने दर्शकों का दिल जीता.
सुलक्षणा पंडित के भाई जतिन-ललित बॉलीवुड के प्रसिद्ध संगीतकार हैं, जबकि बहन विजयता पंडित भी गायिका और अभिनेत्री रही हैं. जबकि, उनके भतीजे यश पंडित टेलीविजन अभिनेता हैं, और भतीजियाँ श्रद्धा व श्वेता पंडित पार्श्व गायिका हैं.

Sulakshana Pandit was born on July 12, 1954, in Raigarh, Madhya Pradesh, into a renowned musical family. She was the niece of the great classical singer Pandit Jasraj. Her father, Pratap Narayan Pandit, was also a skilled classical singer. Growing up in such an environment, Sulakshana started singing at the tender age of 9. Her melodious and velvety voice quickly earned her recognition in playback singing. She gained widespread recognition in 1975 with the song ‘Tu Hi Sagar Hai Tu Hi Kinara’ from the film ‘Sankalp’.
Sulakshana made her acting debut in 1975 with the film ‘Uljan’, in which her co-star was Sanjeev Kumar. She acted in films like ‘Fakira’, ‘Apnapan’, ‘Khandaan’, and ‘Hera Pheri’, where her simplicity and emotional acting won the hearts of the audience.

In contrast to the glamour of her professional life, Sulakshana Pandit’s personal life was filled with loneliness and challenges. It is well known that Sulakshana Pandit was deeply in love with actor Sanjeev Kumar and wanted to marry him, but due to his rejection of her proposal, she remained unmarried throughout her life. The rejection from Sanjeev Kumar and the loneliness in her life pushed her into depression. After health problems, particularly a hip fracture from a fall in the bathroom, her life became solitary and difficult. Her life is a poignant example of talent and personal tragedy in Hindi cinema.
Sulakshana Pandit passed away on November 6, 2025, in Mumbai at the age of 71. Her life was an echo of a velvety voice that resonated through the corridors of cinema and music but never quite reached its full potential.
