कालचक्र—समय का वह अदृश्य पहिया जो निरंतर घूमता रहता है, बिना रुके, बिना थके. यह चक्र न तो किसी की प्रतीक्षा करता है और न ही किसी के लिए विश्राम लेता है. इसकी गति में ही सृष्टि का जन्म, विकास और विलय समाहित है। कालचक्र की यह अविराम यात्रा मनुष्य को बार-बार याद दिलाती है कि जीवन अनित्य है, परिवर्तन ही एकमात्र सत्य है.
‘काल’ का अर्थ है समय और ‘चक्र’ का अर्थ है पहिया. इस प्रकार, कालचक्र का शाब्दिक अर्थ हुआ—”समय का पहिया”. विभिन्न धर्मों और दर्शनों में कालचक्र को अलग-अलग रूपों में देखा गया है: हिंदू दर्शन में कालचक्र को युगों के चक्र (सतयुग, त्रेतायुग, द्वापरयुग, कलियुग) के रूप में देखा जाता है, जो अनंत काल तक चलता रहता है. वहीं, बौद्ध दर्शन में कालचक्र (“व्हील ऑफ टाइम”) संसार के चक्रीय स्वरूप को दर्शाता है, जहाँ जन्म, मृत्यु और पुनर्जन्म का निरंतर चक्र चलता रहता है. जैन दर्शन में इसे “उत्सर्पिणी” (उन्नति का काल) और “अवसर्पिणी” (अवनति का काल) के रूप में वर्णित किया गया है.
कालचक्र की गति के तीन आयाम निर्धारित हैं जिनमें – प्रकृति में सब कुछ चक्रीय है. यहाँ दिन-रात, ऋतुएँ, ज्वार-भाटा, सूर्य और चंद्रमा की गति. यह गति न केवल पृथ्वी पर जीवन को संचालित करती है, बल्कि ब्रह्मांड के विस्तार और संकुचन का भी प्रतीक है. ऋतु परिवर्तन और जीवन चक्र भी कालचक्र की ही देन हैं.

इतिहास भी स्वयं को दोहराता है और सभ्यताएँ उत्थान और पतन के चक्र से गुजरती हैं. राजवंशों का उदय और पतन ये सभी कालचक्र की गति के सामने नतमस्तक हुए हैं. जिस प्रकार मध्य युग में विज्ञान का पतन और पुनर्जागरण में उसका पुनरुत्थान कालचक्र की ही लीला है.
कालचक्र की सबसे रोचक यात्रा है आध्यात्मिक गति और मोक्ष की ओर यात्रा। जिस प्रकार जीवात्मा अपने कर्मों के अनुसार जन्म-मृत्यु के चक्र में बंधी रहती है ठीक उसी प्रकार कालचक्र से मुक्ति पाना ही मोक्ष है.
कालचक्र की गति अटल है, इसे रोका नहीं जा सकता. लेकिन मनुष्य इसके साथ तालमेल बिठाकर जीवन को सार्थक बना सकता है. “काल करे सो आज कर, आज करे सो अब”—यही कालचक्र की सबसे बड़ी सीख है. हमें समय का सदुपयोग करते हुए, नैतिकता और कर्तव्य के मार्ग पर चलना चाहिए, क्योंकि अंततः कालचक्र ही सबका न्याय करता है.

Kalachakra—the invisible wheel of time that keeps rotating continuously, without stopping, without getting tired. This cycle neither waits for anyone nor takes rest for anyone. The birth, development and dissolution of the universe are contained in its motion. This continuous journey of Kaalchakra reminds man again and again that life is temporary, and change is the only truth.
‘Kaal’ means time, and ‘Chakra’ means wheel. Thus, the literal meaning of Kaalchakra is “Wheel of Time”. Kaalchakra has been seen in different forms in different religions and philosophies: In Hindu philosophy, Kaalchakra is seen as the cycle of ages (Satyuga, Tretayuga, Dwaparayuga, Kaliyuga), which continues for eternity. Whereas, in Buddhist philosophy, Kaalchakra (“Wheel of Time”) reflects the cyclical nature of the world, where the continuous cycle of birth, death and rebirth continues. In Jain philosophy, it is described as “Utsarpini” (period of progress) and “Avasarpini” (period of decline).
Three dimensions of the motion of the time cycle are determined, in which – Everything in nature is cyclic. Here, day and night, seasons, tides, the movement of the sun and the moon. This movement not only drives life on Earth but also symbolises the expansion and contraction of the universe. Change of seasons and the cycle of life are also the gifts of the time cycle.

History also repeats itself, and civilisations go through cycles of rise and fall. The rise and fall of dynasties, all these have bowed down to the movement of the time cycle. Just as the fall of science in the Middle Ages and its revival in the Renaissance is the play of the time cycle.
The most interesting journey of the time cycle is the spiritual movement and the journey towards salvation. Just as the soul is bound in the cycle of birth and death according to its deeds, similarly, liberation from the time cycle is salvation.
The movement of the time cycle is immovable, it cannot be stopped. But man can make life meaningful by adjusting to it. “Whatever you want to do tomorrow, do it today, whatever you want to do today, do it now”-this is the biggest lesson of the time cycle. We should make good use of time and follow the path of morality and duty, because ultimately, it is the time cycle that judges everyone.
