हर वर्ष 5 सितम्बर को भारत में शिक्षक दिवस मनाया जाता है. यह दिन भारत के दूसरे राष्ट्रपति, महान दार्शनिक, शिक्षाविद और भारत रत्न डॉ. सर्वपल्ली राधाकृष्णन के जन्मदिन के रूप में मनाया जाता है. उनका मानना था कि शिक्षकों का समाज में महत्वपूर्ण स्थान होता है, क्योंकि वे ही बच्चों के भविष्य का निर्माण करते हैं.

डॉ. सर्वपल्ली राधाकृष्णन का जन्म 5 सितंबर 1888 को हुआ था. वे एक असाधारण व्यक्तित्व के धनी थे. उन्होंने दर्शनशास्त्र में गहन अध्ययन किया और कई विश्वविद्यालयों में पढ़ाया. उनके छात्र उनसे बेहद प्रेम करते थे. जब वे भारत के राष्ट्रपति बने, तो उनके कुछ छात्रों और दोस्तों ने उनका जन्मदिन मनाने का अनुरोध किया. तब उन्होंने कहा, “मेरे जन्मदिन को अलग से मनाने के बजाय, यह मेरे लिए गर्व की बात होगी कि 5 सितंबर को शिक्षक दिवस के रूप में मनाया जाए.” इसी बात को ध्यान में रखते हुए, वर्ष 1962 से हर वर्ष 5 सितंबर को शिक्षक दिवस मनाया जाने लगा.
शिक्षक केवल पाठ्यक्रम पढ़ाने वाले व्यक्ति नहीं होते, वे हमारे जीवन के मार्गदर्शक, प्रेरणास्रोत और संस्कार दाता होते हैं. वे हमें न केवल गणित, विज्ञान या भाषा सिखाते हैं, बल्कि हमें जीवन के मूल्य, अनुशासन, और नैतिकता भी सिखाते हैं. एक अच्छा शिक्षक अपने छात्रों में आत्मविश्वास, जिज्ञासा और सोचने की क्षमता विकसित करता है.
भारतीय संस्कृति में गुरु को ईश्वर से भी ऊँचा स्थान दिया गया है—“गुरु ब्रह्मा, गुरु विष्णु, गुरु देवो महेश्वर.” यह केवल एक श्लोक नहीं, बल्कि एक जीवन दर्शन है. शिक्षक वह दीपक हैं जो अज्ञान के अंधकार को मिटाकर ज्ञान का प्रकाश फैलाते हैं. वे समाज के मूल स्तंभ हैं, जिनके बिना कोई राष्ट्र प्रगति नहीं कर सकता.
शिक्षक दिवस हमें यह याद दिलाता है कि शिक्षा का महत्व कितना गहरा है और एक शिक्षक का हमारे जीवन में क्या स्थान है. यह दिन हमें अपने गुरुओं के प्रति कृतज्ञता व्यक्त करने और उनके द्वारा दिए गए ज्ञान का सम्मान करने का अवसर देता है.

Every year on 5 September, Teachers’ Day is celebrated in India. This day is celebrated as the birthday of the second President of India, great philosopher, educationist and Bharat Ratna Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan. He believed that teachers have an important place in society, because they build the future of children.
Teachers’ Day is not just a holiday, but it gives us an opportunity to remember the contribution of teachers who shape our lives. A teacher not only teaches the curriculum, but he is also a guide, a friend and a philosopher. They instil morality, discipline, and knowledge of right and wrong in the students. Teachers inspire us to achieve our goals and make us better human beings.
Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan was born on 5 September 1888. He was a man of extraordinary personality. He studied philosophy in depth and taught at many universities. His students loved him very much. When he became the President of India, some of his students and friends requested that he celebrate his birthday. Then he said, “Instead of celebrating my birthday separately, it would be a matter of pride for me if September 5 is celebrated as Teachers’ Day.” Keeping this in mind, Teachers’ Day has been celebrated on September 5 every year since the year 1962.
Teachers are not just people who teach the curriculum, they are the guides, inspiration and values of our lives. They not only teach us mathematics, science and language, but also teach us the values, discipline, and ethics of life. A good teacher develops self-confidence, curiosity and thinking ability in their students.
In Indian culture, the Guru has been given a higher place than God—”Guru Brahma, Guru Vishnu, Guru Devo Maheshwar.” This is not just a shloka, but a philosophy of life. Teachers are the lamps that spread the light of knowledge by dispelling the darkness of ignorance. They are the basic pillars of society, without which no nation can progress.
Teachers’ Day reminds us how deep is the deep importance of education and what the place of a teacher in our lives is. This day gives us an opportunity to express gratitude to our teachers and respect the knowledge they have imparted to us.
