- कथक नृत्यांगना सितारा देवी: – आज ही के दिन वर्ष 1920 को कथक नृत्यांगना सितारा देवी का जन्म ‘कलकत्ता’ (आधुनिक कोलकाता) में एक वैष्णव ब्राह्मण परिवार में हुआ था. इनका मूल नाम ‘धनलक्ष्मी’ था. इनके पिता का नाम आचार्य सुखदेव था. कथक इन्हें अपने पिता से विरासत में मिला था लेकिन, सितारा देवी को बाल्यकाल में ही माता-पिता के प्यार से वंचित होना पड़ा था. आठ वर्ष की उम्र तक इनका पालन-पोषण एक दाई ने किया था. आठ वर्ष की उम्र के बाद घर वापस आईं थी. सितारा देवी का विवाह आठ वर्ष की आयु में ही कर दिया गया था जबकि उनके ससुराल वाले चाहते थे कि वह घरबार संभाल लें, किंतु वह स्कूल जाकर शिक्षा ग्रहण करना चाहती थीं. स्कूल जाने के लिए जिद पकड़ लेने पर उनका विवाह टूट गया और उन्हें ‘कामछगढ़ हाई स्कूल’ में प्रवेश दिला दिया गया. कुछ समय बाद सितारा देवी का परिवार मुम्बई चला आया. बताते चलें कि ब्राह्मण परिवार में सितारा देवी के पिता और दादा-परदादा सभी संगीतकार हुआ करते थे, लेकिन परिवार में लड़कियों को नृत्य और संगीत की शिक्षा देने की परंपरा नहीं थी. लेकिन, उनके पिता ने खुद ही सितार को शिक्षा दी. इस कारण से उस समय के लोग सितारा के पिता को समाज से बहिष्कृत कर दिया था. सितारा को बहुत ही छोटी उम्र में फिल्मों में काम करना शुरू किया था. बताते चलें कि, फ़िल्मों में कथक को लाने में सितारा देवी का प्रमुख योगदान रहा था. सितारा देवी को कला और नृत्य के प्रति उनके विशेष योगदान के लिए उन्हें कई पुरस्कार व सम्मान से सम्मनित किया गया था.
- पूर्व उपप्रधानमंत्री लालकृष्ण आडवाणी: – आज ही के दिन वर्ष 1929 को पूर्व उपप्रधानमंत्री लालकृष्ण आडवाणी का जन्म वर्तमान पाकिस्तान के कराची में हुआ था. उनके पिता का नाम के. डी. आडवाणी और माँ का नाम ज्ञानी आडवाणी था. विभाजन के बाद आडवाणी का परिवार भारत आ गए. लालकृष्ण आडवाणी की प्रारम्भिक शिक्षा लाहौर में ही हुई पर बाद में भारत आकर उन्होंने मुम्बई के गवर्नमेंट लॉ कॉलेज से लॉ में स्नातक किया. वर्ष 1951 में डॉक्टर श्यामा प्रसाद मुखर्जी ने जनसंघ की स्थापना की तब से लेकर वर्ष 1957 तक आडवाणी पार्टी के सचिव रहे. वर्ष 1973 -77 तक आडवाणी ने भारतीय जनसंघ के अध्यक्ष का दायित्व सम्भाला. उसके बाद वर्ष 1980 में भारतीय जनता पार्टी की स्थापना के बाद से वर्ष 1986 तक लालकृष्ण आडवाणी पार्टी के महासचिव रहे. इसके बाद वर्ष 1986 – 91 तक पार्टी के अध्यक्ष पद का उत्तरदायित्व भी उन्होंने सम्भाला.वर्ष 1990 में राम मन्दिर आन्दोलन के दौरान उन्होंने सोमनाथ से अयोध्या के लिए राम रथ यात्रा निकाली. वर्ष 1990 की रथयात्रा ने लालकृष्ण आडवाणी की लोकप्रियता को चरम पर पहुँचा दिया था.लालकृष्ण आडवाणी तीन बार भारतीय जनता पार्टी के अध्यक्ष पद पर रह चुके हैं. आडवाणी चार बार राज्यसभा के और पांच बार लोकसभा के सदस्य भी रहे. वर्ष 1977 -79 तक पहली बार केन्द्रीय सरकार में कैबिनेट मन्त्री की हैसियत से लालकृष्ण आडवाणी ने सूचना प्रसारण मन्त्री का भी दायित्व सम्भाला. एनडीए शासनकाल के दौरान लालकृष्ण आडवाणी वर्ष 1999 में एनडीए की सरकार बनने के बाद अटल बिहारी वाजपेयी के नेतृत्व में केन्द्रीय गृहमन्त्री बने और फिर इसी सरकार में उन्हें 29 जून 2002 को उपप्रधानमन्त्री पद का दायित्व भी सौंपा गया.
- प्लेबैक सिंगर उषा उत्थुप: – आज ही के दिन वर्ष 1947 को प्लेबैक सिंगर उषा उत्थुप का जन्म मद्रास (अब चेन्नैई) के एक तमिल ब्राह्मण परिवार में हुआ था. उनके पिता सामी अय्यर है जो बाद में पुलिस आयुक्त बने थे. बचपन में वो बॉम्बे के बाइकुला के लोवलेन में स्थित पुलिस क्वार्टर में रहती थीं और वहीं के एक स्थानीय स्कूल में पढ़ाई करती थीं. जिस स्कूल में उषा पढ़तीं थी उस स्कूल के संगीत शिक्षक ने संगीत क्लास से बहार निकल दिया था. बाद में उनके शक्षक ने उन्हें क्लैपर्स और ट्रैंगल बजने के लिए दिया था. हालांकि वह औपचारिक रूप से संगीत में प्रशिक्षित नहीं थी, वह संगीत के माहौल में पली-बढ़ी. उषा रेडियो सीलोन सुनने का आनंद लिया करती थी. उषा का पहला सार्वजनिक गायन मात्र नौ वर्ष की उम्र में हुआ था. उषा ने संगीतकार अमीन सयानी से मिली जिसके बाद उषा को रेडियो सीलोन के ओवालटाइन म्यूज़िक आवर में गाने का उन्हें एक मौका दिया था. उषा उत्थुप ने कैरियर की शुरुआत नाइन जेम्स नामक एक छोटे से नाइटक्लब से किया था. वर्ष 1968 में उषा उत्थुप ने एक ईपी रिकार्ड पर अंग्रेजी में “जाम्बालया” और द किंग्सटन ट्रायो नामक समूह का “ग्रीनबैक डॉलर” नामक पॉप गानों की रिकॉडिंग की थी. उत्थुप ने वर्ष 1970 – 80 के दशक में संगीतकार आर डी बर्मन और बप्पी लाहिड़ी के लिए कई गाने गाए.
- साहित्यकार लोचन प्रसाद पाण्डेय: – आज ही के दिन वर्ष 1959 को साहित्यकार लोचन प्रसाद पाण्डेय का निधन हुआ था.
- साझेदारी कर विश्व कीर्तिमान स्थापित: – आज ही के दिन वर्ष 1999 में राहुल द्रविड़ और सचिन तेंदुलकर ने एक दिवसीय क्रिकेट मैच में 331 रन बनाकर विश्व कीर्तिमान स्थापित किया.

- Kathak dancer Sitara Devi: – On this day in the year 1920, Kathak dancer Sitara Devi was born in a Vaishnav Brahmin family in ‘Calcutta’ (modern Kolkata). Her original name was ‘Dhanalakshmi’. His father’s name was Acharya Sukhdev. She inherited Kathak from her father, but Sitara Devi was deprived of her parents’ love in her childhood. He was looked after by a babysitter till the age of eight. Came back home after the age of eight. Sitara Devi was married at the age of eight, even though her in-laws wanted her to take care of the household, she wanted to go to school and get an education. Due to his insistence on going to school, his marriage broke and he was admitted to ‘Kamchhagarh High School’. After some time, Sitara Devi’s family moved to Mumbai. Let us tell you that in a Brahmin family, Sitara Devi’s father and great-grandfather were all musicians, but there was no tradition of giving dance and music education to girls in the family. However, his father himself taught sitar. For this reason, the people of that time ostracized Sitara’s father from society. Sitara got work in films at a very young age. - Former Deputy Prime Minister Lal Krishna Advani: – On this day in the year 1929, former Deputy Prime Minister Lal Krishna Advani was born in Karachi, present-day Pakistan. His father’s name was K. D. Advani and his mother’s name was Giani Advani. After the partition, Advani’s family came to India. Lal Krishna Advani’s primary education was in Lahore but later he came to India and graduated in law from Government Law College, Mumbai. From the time Dr. Shyama Prasad Mukherjee established Jan Sangh in 1951, Advani was the secretary of the party till 1957. From 1973-77, Advani held the responsibility of the President of Bharatiya Jana Sangh. After that, from the establishment of the Bharatiya Janata Party in 1980 till 1986, Lal Krishna Advani was the General Secretary of the party. After this, he also held the responsibility of the post of President of the party from 1986 to 1991. In 1990, during the Ram Mandir movement, he took out Ram Rath Yatra from Somnath to Ayodhya. The Rath Yatra of 1990 had taken the popularity of Lal Krishna Advani to its peak. Lal Krishna Advani had served as the President of Bharatiya Janata Party thrice. - Playback Singer Usha Uthup: – On this day in the year 1947, Playback Singer Usha Uthup was born in a Tamil Brahmin family of Madras (now Chennai). His father is Sami Iyer who later became Police Commissioner. In her childhood, she lived in the police quarter located in Lowlane, Byculla, and Bombay and studied in a local school there. The music teacher of the school where Usha studied had walked out of the music class. Later his teacher gave him clappers and triangles to play with. Although she was not formally trained in music, she grew up in a musical environment. Usha used to enjoy listening to Radio Ceylon. Usha’s first public singing took place at the age of just nine. Usha met musician Amin Sayani, after which he allowed her to sing on Radio Ceylon’s Ovaltine Music Hour. Usha Uthup started John’s career in a small nightclub called Nine James. In 1968, Usha Uthup recorded the pop songs “Jambalaya” in English and “Greenback Dollar” by a group called The Kingston Trio on an EP record. Uthup sang many songs for composers R.D Burman and Bappi Lahiri in the years 1970-80s. Some songs like RD Burman’s “Mehbooba Mehbooba” and “Dum Maro Dum” were revisited and became quite popular.
