1. स्वतंत्रता सेनानी ईश्वर चन्द्र विद्यासागर: – आज ही के दिन वर्ष 1820 में स्वतंत्रता सेनानी ईश्वर चन्द्र का जन्म पश्चिमी मेदिनीपुर ज़िला, पश्चिम बंगाल में एक निर्धन धार्मिक परिवार में हुआ था. इनके पिता का नाम ठाकुरदास बन्धोपाध्याय और माता का नाम भगवती देवी था. ईश्वर चन्द्र की प्रारम्भिक शिक्षा गाँव के स्कूल से हुई थी. करीब छह वर्ष की अवस्था में ईश्वर चन्द्र के पिता कलकत्ता (वर्तमान कोलकाता) आ गये थे. ईश्वर चन्द्र बचपन से ही मेधावी थे उन्हें कई संस्थानों द्वारा छात्रवृतियाँ प्रदान की गई थीं. ईश्वर चन्द्र उच्च कोटि के विद्वान थे और उनकी विद्वता के कारण ही उन्हें ‘विद्यासागर’ की उपाधि दी गई थी. वर्ष 1841 में मात्र इक्कीस वर्ष की आयु में ईश्वर चन्द्र  संस्कृत के शिक्षक के तौर पर ‘फ़ोर्ट विलियम कालेज’ में पढ़ाना शुरू कर दिया था. करीब पांच सालों बाद ईश्वर चन्द्र ने फ़ोर्ट विलियम कालेज’ को छोड़ने के बाद वो ‘संस्कृत कालेज’ में बतौर सहायक सचिव नियुक्त हुए थे. ईश्वर चन्द्र विद्यासागर ने समाज सुधार कार्यक्रम के तहत लड़कियों की शिक्षा के लिए स्कूलों की एक श्रृंखला के साथ ही कलकत्ता में ‘मेट्रोपॉलिटन कालेज’ की स्थापना भी की थी.
2. अभिनेता और निर्माता देव आनंद: – आज ही के दिन वर्ष 1921 में अभिनेता और निर्माता देव आनंद का जन्म अविभाजित पंजाब के गुरदासपुर ज़िले (अब पाकिस्तान) के एक मध्यम वर्गीय परिवार में हुआ था. उनका पूरा नाम धर्मदेव (देवदत्त) पिशौरीमल आनंद था. इनके पिता का नाम पिशौरीमल आनंद जो एक वकील थे. देव आनंद ने लाहौर के गवर्नमेंट कालेज से अंग्रेज़ी साहित्य में स्नातक की शिक्षा ली है. देव आनंद की पहली नौकरी एक लिपिक के तौर पर मिलिट्री ऑफिस में मिली थी. नौकरी करने के बाद और परिवार की कमज़ोर आर्थिक स्थिति को देखते हुए वह 30 रुपये जेब में ले कर पिता के मुंबई जाकर काम न करने की सलाह के विपरीत देव अपने भाई चेतन आनंद के साथ फ्रंटियर मेल से 1943 में मुंबई पहुँच गये. गायक बनने का सपना लेकर मुंबई पहुंचे देवा नंद अभिनेता बन गए. देव आनंद ने अपने कैरियर की शुरुआत प्रभात टाकीज़ की एक फ़िल्म हम एक हैं से की थी.
3. पूर्व प्रधानमंत्री डॉ. मनमोहन सिंह: – आज ही के दिन वर्ष 1932 में पूर्व प्रधानमंत्री डॉ. मनमोहन सिंह का जन्म अविभाजित भारत के पंजाब के एक गांव ‘गाह’ में हुआ था. उनके पिता का नाम गुरुमुख सिंह और माता का नाम अमृत कौर था. देश के विभाजन के बाद मनमोहन का परिवार भारत चला आया. मनमोहन सिंह की पत्नी का नाम गुरशरण कौर है. मनमोहन सिंह एक कुशल राजनेता, पूर्व प्रधानमंत्री के साथ-साथ एक अच्छे विद्वान, अर्थशास्त्री और विचारक भी हैं.
4. उद्योगपति लक्ष्मण काशीनाथ किर्लोस्कर: – आज ही के दिन वर्ष 1956 में उद्योगपति लक्ष्मण काशीनाथ किर्लोस्कर का निधन हुआ था.
5. स्वतंत्रता सेनानी टी. बी. कुन्हा: – आज ही के दिन वर्ष 1958 में स्वतंत्रता सेनानी टी. बी. कुन्हा का निधन हुआ था.
6. नृत्य निर्देशक और बैले निर्माता उदय शंकर: – आज ही के दिन वर्ष 1977 में नृत्य निर्देशक और बैले निर्माता उदय शंकर का निधन हुआ था.
7. पार्श्वगायक और संगीतकार हेमन्त कुमार: – आज ही के दिन वर्ष 1989 में पार्श्वगायक और संगीतकार हेमन्त कुमार का निधन कोलकत्ता में हुआ था.
8. डेसमंड हेन्स का विश्व रिकार्ड तोड़ा:- आज ही के दिन वर्ष 1998 में सचिन तेंदुलकर ने जिम्बाब्वे के ख़िलाफ़ एक दिवसीय क्रिकेट मैच में 18वां शतक लगाकर डेसमंड हेन्स का विश्व रिकार्ड तोड़ा था.
9. तकनीक देने का निर्णय: – आज ही के दिन वर्ष 2001 में अमेरिका ने असैनिक अंतरिक्ष कार्यक्रमों के लिए भारत को तकनीक देने का निर्णय किया था.
10. आई.टी.एफ. महिला टेनिस टूर्नामेंट का ख़िताब जीता: – आज ही के दिन वर्ष 2009 में पूजाश्री वेंंकटेश ने रश्मि चक्रवर्ती को हराकर आई.टी.एफ. महिला टेनिस टूर्नामेंट का ख़िताब जीता था.
11. स्वच्छ विकास तंत्र: – आज ही के दिन वर्ष 2011 में संयुक्त राष्ट्र ने “स्वच्छ विकास तंत्र” योजना के तहत हरित गृह गैसों में कमी लाने के लिए दिल्ली मेट्रो को दुनिया का पहला “कार्बन क्रेडिट” दिया जिसके अंतर्गत उसे सात सालों के लिए 95 लाख डॉलर मिलेंगे.

1. Freedom Fighter Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar: – On this day in the year 1820, freedom fighter Ishwar Chandra was born in a poor religious family in West Medinipur district, West Bengal. His father’s name was Thakur Das Bandopadhyay, and his mother’s name was Bhagwati Devi. Ishwar Chandra’s primary education was from the village school. At the age of about six years, Ishwar Chandra’s father came to Calcutta (present-day Kolkata). Ishwar Chandra was brilliant since childhood, and he was provided scholarships by many institutions. Ishwar Chandra was a scholar of high order and was given the title of ‘Vidya Sagar’ because of his scholarship. In the year 1841, at the age of just twenty-one, Ishwar Chandra started teaching as a Sanskrit teacher at ‘Fort William College’. About five years later, after Ishwar Chandra left Fort William College, he was appointed as Assistant Secretary at Sanskrit College. Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar had also established ‘Metropolitan College’ in Calcutta along with a series of schools for the education of girls under the social reform program.
2. Actor and producer Dev Anand: – On this day in the year 1921, actor and producer Dev Anand was born in a middle-class family in the Gurdaspur district of undivided Punjab (now in Pakistan). His full name was Dharamdev (Devdutt) Pishaurimal Anand. His father’s name was Pishaurimal Anand he was a lawyer. Dev Anand has completed his graduation in English Literature from Government College, Lahore. Dev Anand’s first job was as a clerk in the military office. After working and seeing the weak financial condition of the family, Dev reached Mumbai in 1943 by Frontier Mail with his brother Chetan Anand, taking 30 rupees in his pocket and against his father’s advice not to go to Mumbai and work. Devanand, who reached Mumbai with the dream of becoming a singer, became an actor. Dev Anand started his career with a Prabhat Talkies film Hum Ek Hain.
3. Former Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh: – On this day in the year 1932, former Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh was born in ‘Gah’, a village in Punjab, undivided India. His father’s name was Gurmukh Singh, and his mother’s name was Amrit Kaur. After the partition of the country, Manmohan’s family came to India. Manmohan Singh’s wife’s name is Gursharan Kaur. Manmohan Singh is a skilled politician, former Prime Minister, good scholar, economist and thinker.
