अमेरिका में हर वर्ष 11 सितंबर को राष्ट्रीय सेवा एवं स्मरण दिवस मनाया जाता है.वर्ष 2011 में आज ही के दिन आतंकवादी हमलों की त्रासदी को याद करने और उस स्मृति को सेवा में बदलने का प्रतीक है.यह केवल शोक का दिन नहीं, बल्कि एक प्रेरणा भी है कि हम अपने समाज में एकजुटता का संदेश फैलाएं.
1 सितंबर, 2001 को अल-कायदा के आतंकवादियों ने अमेरिका में हमले किए. इन हमलों में दो विमान न्यूयॉर्क शहर के वर्ल्ड ट्रेड सेंटर से टकराए, एक विमान वर्जीनिया में पेंटागन से टकराया, और चौथा विमान शेंकविले, पेन्सिलवेनिया में दुर्घटनाग्रस्त हो गया. इन हमलों में लगभग 3,000 लोग मारे गए, जिनमें सैकड़ों अग्निशामक, पुलिस अधिकारी और अन्य बचावकर्मी शामिल थे.
राष्ट्रीय सेवा एवं स्मरण दिवस की शुरुआत वर्ष 2009 में मेरिकी कांग्रेस ने सार्वजनिक कानून 111-13 के तहत इस दिन को “राष्ट्रीय सेवा एवं स्मरण दिवस” घोषित किया था. इस दिवस का मुख्य उद्देश्य इस त्रासदी की स्मृति को सकारात्मक कार्यों में बदलना. यह दिन नागरिकों को प्रेरित करता है कि वे अपने समुदाय की सेवा करें, चाहे वह रक्तदान हो, पर्यावरण संरक्षण, या ज़रूरतमंदों की मदद करें.
राष्ट्रीय सेवा एवं स्मरण दिवस हमें याद दिलाता है कि हम एक-दूसरे से जुड़े हैं, और दुख की घड़ी में एकजुटता ही सबसे बड़ी ताकत है साथ ही हमें अपने जीवन के उद्देश्य पर विचार करने और दूसरों के लिए जीने की प्रेरणा देता है.
वैसे तो यह दिवस अमेरिका से जुड़ा हुआ है, लेकिन इसकी भावनाएं भारत से भी जुड़ती है. महात्मा गांधी ने भी सेवा को जीवन का मूल मंत्र माना था. आपका जीवन तब तक महत्वहीन है जब तक आप दूसरों के लिए नहीं जीते. राष्ट्रीय सेवा एवं स्मरण दिवस हमें सिखाता है कि स्मृति केवल अतीत को याद करने का माध्यम नहीं, बल्कि भविष्य को बेहतर बनाने की प्रेरणा भी हो सकती है.

National Day of Service and Remembrance is celebrated every year on September 11 in the US. The National Day of Service and Remembrance was started in the year 2009 by the US Congress, under Public Law 111-13, declaring this day as “National Day of Service and Remembrance”. The main objective of this day is to transform the memory of this tragedy into positive actions. This day inspires citizens to serve their community, whether it is donating blood, protecting the environment, or helping the needy.

Although this day is associated with America, its sentiments are also connected to India. Mahatma Gandhi also considered service as the basic mantra of life.
