।।ॐ धूमावत्यै विद्महे संहारिण्यै धीमहि तन्नो धूमा प्रचोदयात्।।
दस महाविद्याओं में सातवीं महाविद्या हैं, माँ धूमावती. जिनका स्वरूप रहस्यमय, उग्र और गूढ़ तांत्रिक शक्तियों से युक्त माना जाता है. इनका स्वरूप विधवा का है, जो इन्हें अन्य देवियों से भिन्न बनाता है. यह देवी ब्रह्मांड के संहार, दुख, दरिद्रता, मृत्यु और अलगाव का प्रतिनिधित्व करती हैं. हालांकि, इनकी उपासना से साधक को मोक्ष, ज्ञान और सभी कष्टों से मुक्ति मिलती है.
माँ धूमावती का स्वरूप अत्यंत विलक्षण है. जिनके केश बिखरे हुए, वस्त्र मैले और अस्त-व्यस्त होते हैं. वह प्रायः काले कौवे पर सवार होती हैं, जिसके रथ में कोई घोड़ा नहीं होता. उनके एक हाथ में सूप (अनाज साफ करने वाला) होता है और दूसरे हाथ में वरदान मुद्रा होती है, लेकिन यह वरदान मुद्रा भी रूखी और कठोर मानी जाती है. उनका मुख धूम्र वर्ण (धुएं जैसा रंग) का होता है और उनकी आँखें कठोर तथा क्रोधी दिखाई देती हैं. वे श्रृंगारहीन होती हैं, जो संसार के क्षण भंगुर स्वरूप को दर्शाती हैं.
माँ धूमावती की उत्पत्ति के संबंध में कई कथाएँ प्रचलित हैं: –
पहली कथा – एक बार देवी पार्वती को बहुत तीव्र भूख लगी. उन्होंने भगवान शिव से भोजन मांगा, लेकिन शिव ध्यानस्थ थे और उन्हें भोजन मिलने में देरी हो रही थी. असह्य भूख से व्याकुल होकर पार्वती ने शिव को ही निगल लिया. शिव के कंठ में विष होने के कारण देवी के शरीर से धुआं निकलने लगा और उनका स्वरूप विकृत हो गया. तब शिव ने उनसे कहा कि तुमने मुझे निगल लिया, इसलिए तुम विधवा हो गई हो और तुम्हारा नाम धूमावती होगा. इस कथा में माँ धूमावती को सृष्टि के संहारक स्वरूप के रूप में देखा जाता है, जो अपने भीतर सब कुछ समाहित कर लेती हैं.
दूसरी कथा: – जब देवी सती ने अपने पिता दक्ष के यज्ञ में आत्मदाह किया, तो उनके जलते हुए शरीर से जो धुआँ निकला, उसी से माँ धूमावती का प्राकट्य हुआ. इस कारण वे हमेशा उदास और अकेली रहती हैं. यह धुआँ सती के अपमानित और क्रुद्ध स्वरूप का भौतिक प्रतीक है.
पूजा विधि: –
माँ धूमावती की पूजा सामान्यतः एकांत और शांत स्थानों पर, विशेषकर श्मशान घाट या एकांत घरों में की जाती है. इनकी पूजा में काले वस्त्र, काले तिल, काले चने और नीम की लकड़ी का प्रयोग किया जाता है. सुहागिन महिलाओं को इनकी पूजा सीधे तौर पर नहीं करनी चाहिए, बल्कि दूर से ही दर्शन करने की सलाह दी जाती है, क्योंकि उनका स्वरूप विधवा का है.
माँ धूमावती अपने भक्तों को शत्रुओं पर विजय प्राप्त करने में सहायता करती हैं और नकारात्मक शक्तियों से सुरक्षा प्रदान करती हैं. उनकी पूजा से सभी प्रकार की बाधाएं, दुख, दरिद्रता और दुर्भाग्य दूर होते हैं. माँ धूमावती को परम् ज्ञान और मोक्ष की देवी भी माना जाता है. उनकी साधना से साधक को जीवन के गूढ़ रहस्यों का ज्ञान प्राप्त होता है और वह सांसारिक मोह-माया से विरक्त होकर आध्यात्मिक उन्नति की ओर बढ़ता है.
नोट: – ज्योतिष के अनुसार, माँ धूमावती का संबंध केतु ग्रह से माना जाता है. इनकी उपासना से केतु के अशुभ प्रभावों को कम किया जा सकता है.
मां धूमावती का भयावह रूप वास्तव में जीवन के उस सत्य को दर्शाता है जिसे हम अक्सर नकारते हैं—विरक्ति, अकेलापन, और मृत्यु. वे जीवन की कठोर वास्तविकताओं को दर्शाती हैं, और साधकों को यह सिखाती हैं कि मृत्यु, दुख और हानि भी जीवन चक्र का एक अभिन्न अंग हैं, और इन्हीं के माध्यम से व्यक्ति परम ज्ञान और मुक्ति की ओर अग्रसर होता है. वे अंधकार में भी प्रकाश दिखाने वाली और सत्य का बोध कराने वाली देवी हैं .

Maa Dhumavati is the seventh Mahavidya among the ten Mahavidyas. Her form is considered mysterious, fierce and endowed with esoteric tantric powers. Her form is that of a widow, which makes her different from other goddesses. This goddess represents the destruction, sorrow, poverty, death and separation of the universe. However, by worshipping her, the devotee gets salvation, knowledge and freedom from all sufferings.
Maa Dhumavati’s form is very unique. Her hair is scattered, clothes are dirty and untidy. She usually rides on a black crow; there is no horse in her chariot. She has a sieve (grain cleaner) in one hand and a blessing mudra in the other hand, but this blessing mudra is also considered dry and harsh. Her face is of a smoky colour, and her eyes appear harsh and angry. She is without makeup, which shows the ephemeral nature of the world.
There are many stories prevalent regarding the origin of Maa Dhumavati: –
First story – Once, Goddess Parvati felt very hungry. She asked Lord Shiva for food, but Shiva was meditating, and it was getting late for him to get food. Distressed by unbearable hunger, Parvati swallowed Shiva. Due to the poison in Shiva’s throat, smoke started coming out of the body of the goddess and her form got distorted. Then Shiva told her that you have swallowed me, so you have become a widow, and your name will be Dhumavati. In this story, Maa Dhumavati is seen as the destroyer form of the creation, who absorbs everything within herself.
Second story: – When Goddess Sati immolated herself in the yagya of her father Daksha, the smoke that came out of her burning body gave birth to Maa Dhumavati. Due to this, she is always sad and lonely. This smoke is the physical symbol of the insulted and angry form of Sati.
Vidhi of worship: –
Maa Dhumavati is generally worshipped in secluded and quiet places, especially cremation grounds or secluded houses. Black clothes, black sesame seeds, black gram and neem wood are used in her worship. Married women should not worship her directly, but are advised to have darshan from a distance, because her form is that of a widow.
Maa Dhumavati helps her devotees to conquer enemies and protects them from negative forces. All kinds of obstacles, sorrows, poverty and misfortune are removed by worshipping her. Maa Dhumavati is also considered the goddess of supreme knowledge and salvation. By worshipping her, the seeker gets knowledge of the mysterious secrets of life, and he moves towards spiritual progress by becoming detached from worldly attachments.
Note: – According to astrology, Maa Dhumavati is associated with the planet Ketu. By worshipping her, the inauspicious effects of Ketu can be reduced.
The fearsome form of Maa Dhumavati represents the truth of life that we often deny—disenchantment, loneliness, and death. She reflects the harsh realities of life and teaches seekers that death, suffering, and loss are also an integral part of the cycle of life, and through these, a person progresses towards ultimate knowledge and liberation. She is the Goddess who shows light even in darkness and makes one realise the truth.
