मत्स्य जयंती हिन्दू धर्म का एक महत्वपूर्ण पर्व है, जो भगवान विष्णु के प्रथम अवतार ‘मत्स्य अवतार’ के उपलक्ष्य में मनाया जाता है. यह दिन चैत्र मास की शुक्ल पक्ष की तृतीया तिथि को मनाया जाता है. इस अवतार में भगवान विष्णु ने एक विशाल मछली (मत्स्य) का रूप धारण कर मानव जाति एवं वेदों की रक्षा की थी. इस दिन विशेष रूप से भगवान विष्णु की पूजा-अर्चना की जाती है और भक्त व्रत रखते हैं.
कथा: –
पौराणिक ग्रंथों के अनुसार, जब सत्ययुग का अंत निकट था, तब एक बार राजा सत्यव्रत (जो आगे चलकर वैवस्वत मनु बने) नदी में स्नान कर रहे थे. तभी उनके हाथों में एक छोटी मछली आ गई, जो उनसे जीवनदान की प्रार्थना करने लगी. दयालु राजा ने उसे अपने कमंडल में रख लिया. अगले ही दिन वह मछली इतनी बड़ी हो गई कि उसे एक बड़े पात्र में रखना पड़ा. धीरे-धीरे मछली विशाल रूप धारण करती गई और अंततः समुद्र में पहुंच गई.
तभी भगवान विष्णु ने प्रकट होकर राजा सत्यव्रत को बताया कि वे स्वयं विष्णु हैं और उन्होंने मत्स्य रूप धारण किया है. उन्होंने राजा को आगामी प्रलय की चेतावनी दी और एक विशाल नाव बनाने को कहा. जब प्रलय आया और पूरी पृथ्वी जलमग्न हो गई, तब राजा सत्यव्रत ने भगवान की आज्ञानुसार सप्तर्षियों के साथ उस नाव में सवार होकर मत्स्य अवतार की सहायता से सुरक्षित स्थान पर पहुंचकर वेदों एवं धर्म की रक्षा की.
मत्स्य अवतार की कथा यह दर्शाती है कि भगवान विष्णु सृष्टि की रक्षा के लिए हर संभव प्रयास करते हैं. यह अवतार ज्ञान और धर्म के संरक्षण का प्रतीक है. इस कथा से यह भी शिक्षा मिलती है कि ईश्वर अपने भक्तों की हर स्थिति में सहायता करते हैं और धर्म का पालन करने वालों को सुरक्षित रखते हैं.
पूजन विधि: –
मत्स्य जयंती के दिन भक्तजन प्रातः स्नान कर भगवान विष्णु की पूजा करते हैं. इस अवसर पर विष्णु सहस्रनाम, भगवद गीता के पाठ और विशेष रूप से मत्स्य अवतार से संबंधित कथाओं का पाठ किया जाता है. इस दिन उपवास रखने का भी विशेष महत्व है. साथ ही, दान-पुण्य करने से अक्षय पुण्य की प्राप्ति होती है.
मत्स्य जयंती केवल एक धार्मिक पर्व नहीं, बल्कि यह सत्य, धर्म और ज्ञान की रक्षा का प्रतीक भी है. यह पर्व हमें यह संदेश देता है कि जब भी संसार में अधर्म बढ़ेगा, तब ईश्वर अवतार लेकर धर्म और मानवता की रक्षा करेंगे. मत्स्य अवतार हमें सिखाता है कि विपत्तियों के समय धैर्य और विश्वास बनाए रखना चाहिए, क्योंकि भगवान सदा अपने भक्तों की रक्षा करते हैं.

Matsya Jayanti is an important Hindu festival celebrated to commemorate the first incarnation of Lord Vishnu, ‘Matsya Avatar’. This day is celebrated on the Tritiya Tithi of Shukla Paksha of Chaitra month. In this incarnation, Lord Vishnu took the form of a huge fish (Matsya) and protected mankind and the Vedas. On this day, Lord Vishnu is especially worshipped, and devotees observe fasting.
Story: –
According to mythological texts, when the end of Satyayug was near, King Satyavrat (who later became Vaivasvat Manu) was taking a bath in the river. Then a small fish came into his hands, which started praying to him for life. The kind king kept it in his kamandal. The very next day that fish grew so big that it had to be kept in a big vessel. Gradually the fish assumed a huge form and finally reached the sea.
Then Lord Vishnu appeared and told King Satyavrat that he was Vishnu and had taken the form of a fish. He warned the king about the upcoming deluge and asked him to build a huge boat. When the deluge came and the whole earth was submerged, then King Satyavrat, as per the Lord’s command, boarded that boat with the Saptarishis and reached a safe place with the help of Matsya Avatar and protected the Vedas and religion.
The story of Matsya Avatar shows that Lord Vishnu makes every possible effort to protect the creation. This avatar is a symbol of the preservation of knowledge and religion. This story also teaches that God helps his devotees in every situation and keeps those who follow religion safely.
Worship method: –
On the day of Matsya Jayanti, devotees worship Lord Vishnu after taking a bath in the morning. On this occasion, Vishnu Sahasranama, Bhagavad Gita recitation and especially the stories related to Matsya Avatar are recited. Fasting on this day also has special significance. Also, by doing charity, one gets Akshay Punya.
Matsya Jayanti is not only a religious festival, but it is also a symbol of protection of truth, religion and knowledge. This festival gives us the message that whenever unrighteousness increases in the world, then God will incarnate and protect religion and humanity. Matsya Avatar teaches us that patience and faith should be maintained in times of adversity because God always protects his devotees.
