भारतीय संस्कृति में दिन, माह, पूर्णिमा और अमावस्या का विशेष महत्व होता है. हिंदी कैलेंडर या पंचांग के अनुसार महीनों के नाम नक्षत्रानुसार रखें गये हैं. हर नक्षत्र की अपनी अलग उपयोगिता होती है. जबकि पूर्णिमा पंचांग के अनुसार मास की 15वीं और शुक्ल पक्ष की अंतिम तिथि (तारीख) है, जिस दिन चंद्रमा आकाश में पूरा होता है. वैसे तो हर महीने की पूर्णिमा को कोई न कोई व्रत या पर्व अवश्य होता है.
वर्तमान समय में माघ का महीना (मघा नक्षत्र के कारण इसे माघ का महीना कहते हैं) अपने अंतिम पड़ाव पर है और पूर्णिमा भी आने वाली है जो अत्यंत ही शुभ है. इस पूर्णिमा का विशेष महत्व है.इस पूर्णिमा के बारे में पौराणिक ग्रन्थों में विस्तार से बताया गया है. पौराणिक ग्रन्थों में माघ के महीने में नदी स्नान पर विशेष जोर दिया गया है. इस महीने में नदी या संगम स्नान करने कई फायदे हैं जिसे वैज्ञानिकों ने भी माना है. इस महीने में नदी स्नान करने का बड़ा फायदा यह होता है कि, ऋतु के परिवर्तन होने से स्वस्थ की समस्या नहीं होती है साथ ही हमारे पाप भी नष्ट हो जाते हैं.
पौराणिक ग्रंथो के अनुसार, इस महीने में भगवान विष्णु गंगा जल में निवास करते हैं और गंगा जल के स्पर्श मात्र से ही सारे पापों का अंत हो जात है और मानव को स्वर्ग की प्राप्ती होती है. पद्दम पुरानों के अनुसार, भगवान नारायण की पूजा-पाठ, उपवास और दान से भी उतने प्रसन्न नहीं होते है जितना की माघ महीने में नदी स्नान करने से होते हैं. महाभारत में भी माघ स्नान व तीर्थ दर्शन का उल्लेख किया गया है. शास्त्रों में एक प्रसंग है कि, राम के वनवास जाने के बाद भरत जब अयोध्या आए और माता कौशल्या से मिलने के गये. वहां, भरत ने माता कौशल्या से कहा कि, ‘यदि राम को वन भेजे जाने में उनकी किंचितमात्र भी सम्मति रही हो तो वैशाख, कार्तिक और माघ पूर्णिमा के स्नान सुख से वो वंचित रहें, और उन्हें निम्न गति प्राप्त हो’. यह सुनते ही माता कौशल्या ने भारत को गले से लगा लिया.
माघी पूर्णिमा कल्पवास की पूर्णता का महापर्व है. एक महीने तक नदी या संगम के तट पर ब्रह्मचर्य का पालन करते हुए और स्नान, दान, तप और भक्ति की पूर्णाहुति का महापर्व है माघी पूर्णिमा. माघी पूर्णिमा के बाद कल्पवासी अपने–अपने घरों की और वापस लौट जाते हैं. कहा जाता है कि, माघ पूर्णिमा में प्रात:काल सूर्योदय से पूर्व किसी पवित्र नदी या घर पर ही स्नान करके भगवान मधुसूदन की पूजा करनी चाहिए साथ ही काले तिलों से हवन और पितरों का तर्पण करना चाहिए. इस माहीने में तिल के दान का विशेष महत्व होता है. मत्स्य पुराण के अनुसार, माघ मास की पूर्णिमा को कोई व्यक्ति ब्रह्माण को दान करता है उसे ब्रह्म लोक की प्राप्ति होती है. माघी पूर्णिमा के दिन प्रात: काल सूर्य उदय होने से पहले घर या नदी स्नान कर भगवान सत्यनारायणजी की पूजा व कथा की जाती है. इस पूजा में पंचामृत और चूरमा का विशेष महत्व होता है.
ज्योतिष के अनुसार, माघ शुक्ल पक्ष पूर्णिमा को यदि शनि मेष राशि पर, गुरु और चन्द्रमा सिंह राशि में और सूर्य श्रवन नक्षत्र पर हो तो इस योग को महामाघी पूर्णिमा कहते है. इस दिन के किए गए स्नान-दान का फल अक्षय होता है.
कथा :-
प्राचीन समय में कांतिका नामक एक नगर था जहाँ धनेश्वर नामक एक ब्राह्मण रहता था. वह नि:संतान था और लाख जतन (उपाय) करने के बाद भी उसकी पत्नी रूपमती से कोई संतान नहीं हुई. ब्राह्मण दान आदि मांग कर अपना जीवन निर्वाह करता था. एक दिन की बात है, एक व्यक्ति ने ब्राह्मण दंपत्ति को दान देने से इसलिए मना कर दिया कि वह नि:संतान दंपत्ति को दान नहीं करता है. । लेकिन उसने उस ब्रहामण को सलाह दी कि वो चंद्रिका देवी की आराधना करें.
इसके बाद ब्राह्मण दंपत्ति ने माँ काली की घनघोर आराधना की. 16 दिनों के उपवास के बाद माँ काली प्रकट हुईं और बोलीं ‘तुमको संतान की प्राप्ति अवश्य होगी. अपनी शक्ति के अनुसार आटे से बना दीप जलाओं और उसमें एक-एक दीप की वृद्धि करते रहना यह कर्क पूर्णिमा के दिन तक 22 दीपों को जलाने की हो जानी चाहिए’. देवी के कथनानुसार ब्राह्मण ने आम के वृक्ष से एक आम तोड़ कर पूजन हेतु अपनी पत्नी को दे दिया. पत्नी इसके बाद गर्भवती हो गयी। देवी के आशीर्वाद से देवदास नाम का पुत्र पैदा हुआ.
देवदास पढ़ने के लिए अपने मामा के साथ काशी गया, लेकिन रास्ते में घटना हुई और प्रपंचवश उसे विवाह करना पड़ा. जबकि देवदास ने साफ-साफ बता दिया था कि वह अल्पायु है, लेकिन विधि के चक्र के चलते उसे मजबूरन विवाह करना पड़ा. उधर, काशी में एक रात पान हरने काल आया लेकिन, लेकिन व्रत के प्रताप से देवदास जीवित हो गया.

Each Nakshatra has its own utility. While Purnima is the 15th of the month and the last date (date) of Shukla Paksha according to the Panchang, on which the moon is complete in the sky. At present, the month of Magha (because of Magha Nakshatra it is called Magha month) is at its last stage and full moon is about to come which is very auspicious. This full moon has special significance. This full moon has been explained in detail in mythological texts. In mythological texts, special emphasis has been laid on river bath in the month of Magha. Bathing in river or Sangam in this month has many benefits, which have also been accepted by scientists. The great advantage of taking a bath in the river in this month is that, due to the change of season, there is no problem of health and also our sins are destroyed.
According to mythological texts, in this month Lord Vishnu resides in the water of the Ganges and only by the touch of the water of the Ganges all the sins end and man attains heaven. According to the Padma Puranas, worship of Lord Narayana, fasting and charity are not as pleased as they are by taking a bath in the river in the month of Magha. Magh bath and pilgrimage has also been mentioned in Mahabharata. There is an incident in the scriptures that when Bharat came to Ayodhya after Rama’s exile and went to meet Kaushalya’s mother. There, Bharat told mother Kaushalya that, ‘if she had even the slightest consent in sending Rama to the forest, she would be deprived of the pleasures of bathing in Vaishakh, Kartik and Magha Purnima, and she would get low status’. On hearing this, Mata Kaushalya hugged Bharat.
Maghi Purnima is the great festival of completion of Kalpavas. Maghi Purnima is a great festival of observing celibacy on the banks of a river or Sangam for a month and completing sacrifices of bath, charity, penance and devotion. After Maghi Purnima, the Kalpavasi return to their respective homes. It is said that, in the morning of Magh Purnima, before sunrise, one should worship Lord Madhusudan by taking a bath in a holy river or at home, as well as offering havan and ancestors with black sesame seeds. Donation of sesame has special importance in this month. According to Matsya Purana, on the full moon day of the month of Magha, a person donates to Brahma, he attains Brahma Lok. On the day of Maghi Purnima, in the morning before sunrise, Lord Satyanarayanji is worshiped and story is recited by taking bath at home or river. Panchamrit and Churma have special importance in this worship.
According to astrology, on Magha Shukla Paksha Purnima, if Saturn is in Aries, Guru and Moon are in Leo and Sun is in Shravan Nakshatra, then this yoga is called Mahamaghi Purnima. The fruit of the bath-donation done on this day is inexhaustible.

In ancient times there was a city named Kantika where a Brahmin named Dhaneshwar lived. He was childless and even after doing lakhs of Jatan (remedies), his wife Roopmati did not get any child. Brahmin used to live his life by demanding donations etc. Once upon a time, a person refused to donate to a Brahmin couple because he does not donate to a childless couple. , But he advised that Brahmin to worship Chandrika Devi.
After this, the Brahmin couple worshiped Maa Kali fervently. After fasting for 16 days, Maa Kali appeared and said, ‘You will definitely have a child. According to your power, light a lamp made of flour and keep increasing each lamp in it, it should be enough to light 22 lamps by the day of Kark Purnima. According to the statement of the goddess, the Brahmin plucked a mango from the mango tree and gave it to his wife for worship. The wife became pregnant after this. With the blessings of the Goddess, a son named Devdas was born.
Devdas went to Kashi with his maternal uncle to study, but an incident happened on the way and he had to get married. While Devdas had clearly told that he is young, but due to the cycle of law, he was forced to marry. On the other hand, one night in Kashi, the time came to lose the paan, but Devdas became alive due to the glory of the fast.
