क्या पुरुषों को कान छिदवाना फैशन है…?

आधुनिक युग में पुरुषों का कान छिदवाना एक फैशन ही है लेकिन, कभी ये सनातन संस्कृति का हिस्सा हुआ करता था. कभी-कभी ज्योतिषाचार्य भी कान छिदवाने की सलाह दिया करते हैं. आखिर कान छिदवाना परम्परा है या फैशन आइये जानते हैं.  

जिस तरह महिलाऐं सौंदर्य और अलंकरण के लिए जानी जाती है उसी प्रकार पुरुष भी सौंदर्य और दूसरों से अलग दिखने के लिए कान छिदवाते हैं. पुरुषों द्वारा कान छिदवाना सदियों पुराना है, लेकिन आधुनिक संदर्भ में यह एक सशक्त फैशन स्टेटमेंट और व्यक्तिगत अभिव्यक्ति का माध्यम बन चुका है. यह मात्र एक अस्थायी चलन नहीं है, बल्कि एक व्यापक सांस्कृतिक और सामाजिक बदलाव को दर्शाता है जिसमें पुरुषों के लिए सौंदर्य और अलंकरण की परिभाषाएँ पारंपरिक सीमाओं से बाहर निकल रहें हैं. इतिहास को देखें तो कई सभ्यताओं में कान छिदवाने की शुरुआत पुरुषों से ही मानी जाती है.

सनातन संस्कृति में 16 संस्कार होते थे उन्हीं 16 संस्कारों एक संस्कार “कर्णवेध” हुआ करता था. वर्तमान समय के आधुनिक भारतवर्ष के लोग मुख्यत: 2-3 संस्कार कर पाते हैं. बताते चलें कि, कर्णवेध संस्कार हिंदू धर्म के सोलह संस्कारों में से नौवां संस्कार है, जिसमें बच्चों के कान छेदने की रस्म निभाई जाती है. किसी भी बच्चे का कर्णवेध संस्कार 6 महीने से लेकर 16 महीने या फिर उसके बाद तीसरे, पांचवें या सातवें विषम वर्ष में किया जाता है.

इस संस्कार के कई फायदे हैं उनमें बच्चों की सुनने की शक्ति में वृद्धि, आभूषण पहनने और स्वास्थ्य रक्षा के लिए किया जाता है, जिससे मानसिक और शारीरिक लाभ होता है. शास्त्रों के अनुसार, ब्राह्मण और वैश्य के लिए चांदी, क्षत्रिय के लिए सोना और शूद्र के लिए लोहे की सुई का उपयोग करने का विधान है. वहीँ, कुछ समुदायों में कान या नाक छिदवाना धर्म और जातीय पहचान से भी जुड़ा है; जैसे–कान न छिदवाना कई जगह “संस्कार न कराया जाना” माना जाता था.

आयुर्वेद और वैकल्पिक चिकित्सा (जैसे एक्यूप्रेशर/एक्यूपंक्चर) के अनुसार कान में कई महत्वपूर्ण बिंदु होते हैं. माना जाता है कि कान छिदवाने से कुछ नाड़ी बिंदुओं पर हल्का स्थायी प्रेशर पड़ता है, जो एकाग्रता, याददाश्त, दिमाग़ की सक्रियता आदि पर सकारात्मक असर डाल सकता है.

ज्योतिषाचार्य के अनुसार, कान छिदवाने से राहु और केतु ग्रह शांत होते हैं. साथ ही यह चंद्रमा को भी मजबूत करता है, जिससे जीवन में सुख-समृद्धि और स्थिरता आती है. कुछ मान्यताओं के अनुसार, ऊपरी कान छिदवाना शुक्र ग्रह से जुड़ा है, जो कैरियर और सफलता में मदद करता है.  अन्य संस्कृतियों जैसे मिस्र, रोम, ग्रीस आदि में भी पुरुषों के कान छिदवाए जाते थे, कभी स्टेटस के लिए, कभी धार्मिक मान्यता के रूप में, तो कभी योद्धा–पहचान के रूप में.

वर्तमान समय में पुरुषों का कान छिदवाना एक फैशन बनता जा रहा है. वर्तमान समय के फिल्म स्टार, क्रिकेटर, रैपर, के–पॉप स्टार – सबमें पुरुषों के कान में ईयरिंग बहुत आम हो गए हैं. यह एक मजबूत फैशन स्टेटमेंट बन गया है. कभी आभूषण को “औरतों की चीज़” माना जाता था. वर्तमान समय में कई पुरुष इसे अपनी स्टाइल, पर्सनैलिटी और पहचान का हिस्सा मानकर अपनाते हैं.

बताते चलें कि, दशकों से, कान छिदवाने को पश्चिमी समाजों में केवल महिलाओं या कुछ उप-संस्कृतियों से जोड़ा जाता था. अब यह धारणा टूट रही है, और इसे लिंग-तटस्थ (Gender-Neutral) या कम से कम पुरुषों के लिए स्वीकार्य माना जा रहा है. वहीँ, कुछ बहुत ही पारंपरिक कॉर्पोरेट वातावरणों में यह अभी भी विवादित हो सकता है, लेकिन स्टार्टअप्स, रचनात्मक उद्योगों और प्रौद्योगिकी क्षेत्र में अब छोटे स्टड्स को आसानी से स्वीकार किया जाता है. वर्तमान समय की युवा पीढ़ी के लिए, यह एक सामान्य व्यक्तिगत पसंद है, जबकि पिछली पीढ़ी के लिए यह “विद्रोही” हो सकता था. इस पीढ़ीगत अंतर ने भी इसकी व्यापक स्वीकृति को बढ़ावा दिया है.

फैशन केवल कपड़ों तक सीमित नहीं है; यह व्यक्ति की पहचान को दर्शाता है. कान छिदवाना पुरुषों को अपनी स्वतंत्रता, रचनात्मकता और अद्वितीयता को बिना बोले व्यक्त करने का अवसर देता है. इक्कीसवीं सदी में, “मेट्रोसेक्शुअल” (वह पुरुष जो अपनी ग्रूमिंग और सौंदर्य पर ध्यान देता है) की अवधारणा ने पुरुषों के लिए एक्सेसरीज़ और सौंदर्य उत्पादों का उपयोग सामाजिक रूप से अधिक स्वीकार्य बना दिया है.

वर्तमान समय में पुरुषों के लिए बॉडी मॉडिफिकेशन का एक सरल और प्रभावी तरीका है जो उन्हें अपने व्यक्तित्व को फैशन के माध्यम से व्यक्त करने की सुविधा देता है. जैसे-जैसे समाज लिंग-आधारित रूढ़ियों को त्याग रहा है, कान छिदवाना पुरुषों के सौंदर्य और फैशन परिदृश्य में एक स्थायी और लचीला तत्व बनता जा रहा है.

Just as women are known for their beauty and adornment, men also pierce their ears to stand out. Ear piercing by men is centuries old, but in the modern context, it has become a powerful fashion statement and a means of personal expression. This is not just a temporary trend, but reflects a broader cultural and social shift in which the definitions of beauty and adornment for men are expanding beyond traditional boundaries. Historically, ear piercing in many civilizations is believed to have originated with men.

In Sanatan culture, there were 16 rituals, one of which was “Karnavedha.” In modern India, people generally perform only 2-3 rituals. It should be noted that the Karnavedha Sanskar is the ninth of the sixteen sanskars of Hinduism, which involves piercing the ears of children. The Karnavedha Sanskar is performed for children between the ages of 6 and 16, or in the third, fifth, or seventh odd years.

This Sanskar has many benefits, including enhancing a child’s hearing, wearing jewelry, and maintaining health, which provides mental and physical benefits. According to scriptures, silver needles are prescribed for Brahmins and Vaishyas, gold for Kshatriyas, and iron for Shudras. In some communities, piercing the ears or nose is also linked to religious and caste identity; for example, not piercing the ears was considered a “sanskar” in many places.

According to Ayurveda and alternative medicine (such as acupressure/acupuncture), the ear contains several important points. It is believed that ear piercing applies gentle, sustained pressure to certain nerve points, which can have a positive effect on concentration, memory, and brain activity.

According to astrologers, ear piercing pacifies the planets Rahu and Ketu. It also strengthens the Moon, bringing happiness, prosperity, and stability to life. According to some beliefs, piercing the upper ear is associated with the planet Venus, which helps with career and success. In other cultures, such as Egypt, Rome, and Greece, men also had their ears pierced, sometimes for status, sometimes as a religious symbol, and sometimes as a warrior identity.

In modern times, men’s ear piercing is becoming fashionable. Earrings are becoming increasingly common among modern-day film stars, cricketers, rappers, and K-pop stars. It has become a strong fashion statement. Jewelry was once considered a “woman’s thing.” Many men now embrace it as part of their style, personality, and identity.

It’s worth noting that, for decades, ear piercings were associated only with women or certain subcultures in Western societies. Now, this perception is breaking down, and it’s becoming gender-neutral, or at least acceptable for men. While it may still be controversial in some very traditional corporate environments, small studs are now readily accepted in startups, creative industries, and the technology sector. For the current younger generation, it’s a normal personal choice, whereas for previous generations, it may have been considered “rebellious.” This generational difference has also fueled its widespread acceptance.

Fashion isn’t just about clothing; it reflects a person’s identity. Ear piercings give men the opportunity to express their independence, creativity, and uniqueness without speaking. In the twenty-first century, the concept of “metrosexual” (a man who pays attention to his grooming and beauty) has made the use of accessories and beauty products more socially acceptable for men.

Body modification is a simple and effective way for men to express their individuality through fashion. As society abandons gender-based stereotypes, ear piercings are becoming a permanent and flexible element in the male beauty and fashion landscape.
