जान ओप्लेटाल के अंतिम संस्कार में भी छात्रों ने बड़ा प्रदर्शन किया. इसके प्रतिशोध में, 17 नवंबर, 1939 को, नाज़ी सैनिकों ने प्राग में छात्र छात्रावासों पर छापा मारा और लगभग 1200 छात्रों को गिरफ्तार कर लिया. इन छात्रों को एकाग्रता शिविरों (यातना शिविरों) में भेज दिया गया. गिरफ्तार किए गए छात्रों में से नौ छात्रों (छात्र नेताओं और प्रोफेसरों) को बिना किसी सुनवाई के फांसी दे दी गई. इसके अलावा, नाज़ियों ने चेकोस्लोवाकिया में सभी चेक विश्वविद्यालयों और कॉलेजों को बंद कर दिया.
इस बर्बर घटना के दो साल बाद, वर्ष 1941 में, लंदन में फासीवाद के खिलाफ लड़ रहे छात्रों की एक अंतर्राष्ट्रीय बैठक में 17 नवंबर को ‘अंतर्राष्ट्रीय छात्र एकजुटता दिवस’ (International Students’ Solidarity Day) के रूप में मनाने का फैसला किया गया. यह दिन उन साहसी छात्रों के बलिदान को याद करता है जिन्होंने स्वतंत्रता और बेहतर भविष्य के लिए आवाज उठाई थी.

The history of International Students’ Day is linked to a tragic and inspiring event. On October 28, 1939, students and teachers in Nazi-occupied Czechoslovakia organized a peaceful demonstration to mark the country’s founding anniversary. Nazi troops brutally suppressed this demonstration, resulting in the shooting death of medical student Jan Opletal.
Students also held a large demonstration at Jan Opletal’s funeral. In retaliation, on November 17, 1939, Nazi troops raided student dormitories in Prague and arrested approximately 1,200 students. These students were sent to concentration camps. Nine of the arrested students (student leaders and professors) were executed without trial. Furthermore, the Nazis closed all Czech universities and colleges in Czechoslovakia.
Two years after this brutal incident, in 1941, an international meeting of students fighting against fascism in London decided to celebrate November 17th as International Students’ Solidarity Day. This day commemorates the sacrifices of those courageous students who spoke out for freedom and a better future.
