“International Press Freedom Day” is celebrated every year on 3 May. The United Nations recognized this day in the year 1993, which marks the anniversary of the Windhoek Declaration in the year 1991. In this declaration, African journalists emphasized the need for a free press.
Freedom of the press is the cornerstone of democracy. An independent and fair media plays an important role in helping citizens make informed decisions, holding governments accountable and promoting transparency. World Press Freedom Day reminds governments, media organizations and citizens of the need to protect and promote freedom of the press. This day reaffirms the right to freedom of expression, which is enshrined in Article 19 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
International Press Freedom Day reminds us that independent media is an important pillar of democracy. We must work together to protect the rights of journalists and ensure that they can do their work without fear or pressure.
