अंतर्राष्ट्रीय मजदूर दिवस, जिसे श्रमिक दिवस या मई दिवस भी कहा जाता है, हर वर्ष एक मई को दुनिया भर में मनाया जाता है. यह दिन श्रमिकों के अधिकारों, बेहतर काम करने की परिस्थितियों और सामाजिक न्याय के लिए चल रहे संघर्ष का प्रतीक है. यह दुनिया के करीब 80 देशों में मनाया जाता है. वहीं, यूरोपीय देशों में एक मई के दिन मई दिवस भी मनाया जाता है. इस दिन लोग एक दुसरे को गिफ्ट देते है व नाचते-गाते हैं.
बताते चलें कि, 1856 में मजदूरों (श्रमिक) की छुट्टी का विचार आया और इसकी शुरुआत आस्ट्रेलिया से हुई, धीरे-धीरे यह पूरी दुनिया में फ़ैल गया. मजदूर दिवस की शुरुआत अमेरिका में 1 मई 1886 को हुई थी उस वक्त अमेरिका के मजदूर संघों ने मिलकर निश्चय किया था कि वे 8 घंटे से ज्यादा काम नहीं करेंगे.
बताते चलें कि, संयुक्त राज्य अमेरिका में तीन दिनों की आम हडताल के दौरान हेमार्केट स्क्वायर (शिकागो) में शांतिपूर्ण प्रदर्शन हो रहा था. लेकिन पुलिस भीड़ को तितर-बितर करने के लिए आगे बढ़ी, तभी वहां पर विस्फोट हुआ जिससे कई मजदूरों की जान चली गई व घायल हो गयें. सालों बाद हेमार्केट शहीदों की याद में मजदूर दिवस मनाया जाने लगा. 1889 पेरिस में अन्तराष्ट्रीय महासभा की दूसरी बैठक फ्रेंच क्रान्ति को याद करते हुए एक प्रस्ताव पारित किया गया कि फ्रेंच क्रान्ति को अन्तराष्ट्रीय मजदूर दिवस के रूप में मनाया जाय साथ ही मजदूरों को 8 घंटे काम करने की इजाजत दी गई और इसकी शुरुआत अमेरिका से की गई.
भारत में सबसे पहले मजदूर दिवस की शुरुआत चेन्नई में लेबर किसान पार्टी ऑफ हिंदुस्तान ने 1 मई 1923 को चेन्नई में हुई थी. उस वक्त इसे मद्रास दिवस के तौर पर मनाया जाता था. संयुक्त राष्ट्र के अंतर्गत आने वाली अंतरराष्ट्रीय मजदूर संस्था दुनिया भर में लेबर क्लास के लोगों का जीवन स्तर सुधारने की दिशा में काम करती है साथ ही यह संस्था दुनिया के अलग-अलग हिस्सों में रैली और मार्च निकालती है ताकि मजदूर उत्पीड़न, न्यूनतम मजदूरी कानून और अप्रवासी मजदूरों को लेकर जागरुकता फैलाई जा सके. एक मई के दिन सभी श्रमिकों की छुट्टी होती है या यूँ कहें कि, पब्लिक हाली डे होता है लेकिन जितना महत्व पहले होता था उसके अनुरूप वर्तमान समय में महत्व नगण्य प्राय हो गया है.

International Labour Day…
International Labour Day, also known as Labour Day or May Day, is celebrated every year on May 1 around the world. This day symbolises the ongoing struggle for workers’ rights, better working conditions, and social justice. It is celebrated in about 80 countries. At the same time, May Day is also celebrated on May 1 in European countries. On this day, people give gifts to each other, dance, and sing.
Let us tell you that, in 1856, the idea of a holiday for labourers came, and it started from Australia; gradually, it spread all over the world. Labour Day started in America on May 1, 1886. At that time, the labour unions of America had decided together that they would not work for more than 8 hours.
Let us tell you that, during the three-day general strike in the United States, a peaceful demonstration was going on in Haymarket Square (Chicago). But when the police moved forward to disperse the crowd, an explosion took place there, which killed and injured many workers. Years later, Labour Day began to be celebrated in memory of the Haymarket martyrs. In 1889, in the second meeting of the International General Assembly in Paris, remembering the French Revolution, a resolution was passed that the French Revolution should be celebrated as International Labour Day, and workers were allowed to work for 8 hours. It started in America.
In India, the first Labour Day was started in Chennai on 1 May 1923 by the Labour Kisan Party of Hindustan. At that time, it was celebrated as Madras Day. The International Labor Organization under the United Nations works towards improving the living standards of the working class people around the world, and this organization also organizes rallies and marches in different parts of the world so that awareness can be spread about labor oppression, minimum wage law and migrant workers. On 1st May, all workers have a holiday or we can say that it is a public holiday but in the present times, its importance has become negligible as compared to the importance it had earlier.
