Gopashtami holds special significance, particularly in Vrajbhoomi (Mathura and Vrindavan), where it is celebrated with great enthusiasm.
According to mythology, on this day Lord Krishna started grazing cows for the first time along with cowherds. It is also called the festival of Gocharan. On Gopashtami, cows and calves are worshipped and decorated and reverence is expressed towards them. Devotees perform special puja, feed fodder to cows, and pray for their health and well-being.
