बॉलीवुड सबसे खूबसूरत अभिनेत्रियों में से एक, कामिनी कौशल का निधन भारतीय फिल्म जगत के लिए एक अपूरणीय क्षति है. उन्होंने लगभग सात दशकों तक अपने अभिनय से दर्शकों के दिलों पर राज किया और भारतीय सिनेमा के स्वर्ण युग में एक महत्वपूर्ण स्थान बनाया था.
कामिनी कौशल का जन्म 16 जनवरी 1927 को तत्कालीन ब्रिटिश भारत के लाहौर (अब पाकिस्तान में) में हुआ था. उनका वास्तविक नाम उमा कश्यप था. उनके पिता का नाम प्रोफेसर शिव राम कश्यप था जो लाहौर में पंजाब विश्वविद्यालय में बॉटनी के प्रोफेसर थे और जिन्हें भारतीय वनस्पति विज्ञान का जनक माने जाते है.
कामिनी कौशल ने लाहौर के गवर्नमेंट कॉलेज से अंग्रेजी साहित्य में बी.ए. (ऑनर्स) किया। अपने युवा दिनों में वह घुड़सवारी, तैराकी, स्केटिंग और आकाशवाणी पर रेडियो नाटकों में सक्रिय थीं, जिसने उनके अभिनय कौशल को निखारा था.
कामिनी कौशल ने अपने कैरियर की शुरुआत वर्ष 1946 में चेतन आनंद की फिल्म ‘नीचा नगर’ से की थी. बताते चलें कि, कान्स फिल्म फेस्टिवल में पहली भारतीय फिल्मों में से एक थी फिल्म ‘नीचा नगर’. ‘नीचा नगर’ ने वर्ष 1946 में प्रतिष्ठित कान्स फिल्म फेस्टिवल में सर्वोच्च पुरस्कार ‘पाल्मे डी’ओर’ (गोल्डन पाम) जीता, जिसने कामिनी कौशल को वैश्विक पहचान दिलाई थी.
वर्ष 1940 के दशक के अंत से लेकर वर्ष 1950 के दशक तक, वह हिंदी सिनेमा की सबसे महंगी और सफल अभिनेत्रियों में से एक थीं. उन्होंने दिलीप कुमार, देव आनंद और राज कपूर जैसे दिग्गजों के साथ काम किया था. उन्होंने दिल्ली, शहीद, अरण्यक, बिराज, और दो बीघा ज़मीन जैसी फिल्मों में यादगार भूमिकाएँ निभाईं. उनकी अभिनय शैली में सादगी, भावनात्मक गहराई और नैसर्गिकता झलकती थी.
कामिनी कौशल ने चरित्र भूमिकाओं में भी अपनी छाप छोड़ी और नई पीढ़ी के साथ काम किया. वर्ष 1960 के दशक के बाद उन्होंने चरित्र भूमिकाएँ निभानी शुरू कर दीं और ‘उपकार’, ‘पूरब और पश्चिम’ जैसी मनोज कुमार की कई सफल फिल्मों का हिस्सा बनीं. उन्होंने नई पीढ़ी के साथ भी काम किया. उन्होंने शाहरुख खान की ‘चेन्नई एक्सप्रेस’, शाहिद कपूर की ‘कबीर सिंह’ (जिसके लिए उन्हें बेस्ट सपोर्टिंग एक्ट्रेस का नॉमिनेशन भी मिला) और आमिर खान की ‘लाल सिंह चड्ढा’ जैसी फिल्मों में भी देखा
कामिनी कौशल को उनके योगदान के लिए कई पुरस्कार और सम्मान मिला जिनमें – फिल्मफेयर सर्वश्रेष्ठ अभिनेत्री पुरस्कार, फिल्मफेयर लाइफटाइम अचीवमेंट अवॉर्ड से सम्मानित किया गया था.
कामिनी कौशल का निजी जीवन भी संघर्षों से भरा रहा. उनकी बड़ी बहन की एक कार दुर्घटना में असामयिक मृत्यु हो गई थी, जिसके बाद उन्होंने वर्ष 1948 में अपने जीजा बी.एस. सूद से विवाह कर लिया ताकि वह अपनी बहन की दो बेटियों को माँ का प्यार दे सकें। वो अपनी दो सौतेली बेटियों (कुमकुम सोमानी और कविता साहनी) और तीन बेटों (राहुल, विदुर और श्रवण) की माँ थीं.
कामिनी कौशल का निधन 14 नवंबर 2025 को हुआ. उन्होंने अपनी सहज सुंदरता, प्रभावशाली अभिनय और बहुमुखी प्रतिभा से हिंदी सिनेमा के इतिहास में एक अमिट छाप छोड़ी है. उनकी सादगी और गहराई से किया गया अभिनय ही स्थायी होता है. वे उन कलाकारों में से थीं जिन्होंने नायिका से लेकर माँ और दादी तक की भूमिकाएँ निभाकर हर पीढ़ी से जुड़ाव बनाया. उनका जाना एक युग का अंत है.

The passing of Kamini Kaushal, one of Bollywood’s most beautiful actresses, is an irreparable loss to the Indian film industry. She captivated audiences with her acting for nearly seven decades and held a significant place in the golden age of Indian cinema.
Kamini Kaushal was born on January 16, 1927, in Lahore (now in Pakistan), then British India. Her real name was Uma Kashyap. Her father, Professor Shiv Ram Kashyap, was a professor of botany at Punjab University in Lahore and is considered the father of Indian botany.
Kamini Kaushal earned a B.A. (Hons.) in English Literature from Government College, Lahore. In her younger days, she was active in horseback riding, swimming, skating, and radio plays on All India Radio, which honed her acting skills.
Kamini Kaushal began her career in 1946 with Chetan Anand’s film “Neecha Nagar.” It should be noted that “Neecha Nagar” was one of the first Indian films to be screened at the Cannes Film Festival. “Neecha Nagar” won the Palme d’Or (Golden Palm), the highest award at the prestigious Cannes Film Festival, in 1946, catapulting Kamini Kaushal to global recognition.
From the late 1940s to the 1950s, she was one of the most expensive and successful actresses in Hindi cinema. She worked with legends like Dilip Kumar, Dev Anand, and Raj Kapoor. She played memorable roles in films like “Dilli,” “Shaheed,” “Aranyak,” “Biraj,” and “Do Bigha Zameen.” Her acting style reflected simplicity, emotional depth, and naturalness.
Kamini Kaushal also made her mark in character roles and worked with the new generation. From the 1960s onward, she began playing character roles and appeared in several successful Manoj Kumar films, including “Upkar” and “Purab Aur Paschim.” She also worked with the new generation. She appeared in films like Shah Rukh Khan’s “Chennai Express,” Shahid Kapoor’s “Kabir Singh” (for which she received a Best Supporting Actress nomination), and Aamir Khan’s “Laal Singh Chaddha.”
Kamini Kaushal received numerous awards and honors for her contributions, including the Film fare Best Actress Award and the Film fare Lifetime Achievement Award.
Kamini Kaushal’s personal life was also filled with struggles. Her elder sister died prematurely in a car accident, after which she married her brother-in-law, B.S. Sood, in 1948 to provide motherly love to her sister’s two daughters. She was the mother of two stepdaughters (Kumkum Somani and Kavita Sahni) and three sons (Rahul, Vidur, and Shravan).
Kamini Kaushal passed away on November 14, 2025. With her effortless beauty, powerful acting, and versatile talent, she left an indelible mark on the history of Hindi cinema. Her simplicity and depth of delivery are enduring. She was one of those actors who struck a chord with every generation, playing roles ranging from heroines to mothers and grandmothers. Her passing marks the end of an era.
