The 2025 Nobel Peace Prize has been awarded to Venezuelan opposition leader Maria Corina Machado. Machado is the national coordinator of the Venezuelan opposition party, Vente Venezuela, and has consistently spoken out against the authoritarian policies of Nicolás Maduro’s communist government. She is known for promoting democratic values and human rights in the country, for which she has faced government repression, sanctions, and threats. In addition to being included in the BBC’s “Top 100 Women” list, she has also been awarded the European Union’s Sakharov Prize in 2024.
