Earth Day is celebrated every year on 22 April. This day symbolises raising awareness about environmental protection and the conservation of the Earth. It is a global movement that inspires people to think about environmental challenges and bring about positive change.
The foundation of World Earth Day was laid in the United States in the year 1970. Wisconsin Senator Gaylord Nelson conceived of this day as environmental education. A major oil spill incident in Santa Barbara, California in the year 1969 inspired Nelson to take some concrete steps for environmental protection.
He called for a nationwide protest to focus students and the general public on environmental issues. On April 22, 1970, about 20 million Americans took to the streets demanding clean air, clean water and wildlife conservation. This historic day played an important role in the formation of the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the passage of important environmental laws such as the Clean Air Act, Clean Water Act and Endangered Species Act.
In the year 1990, Dennis Hayes, who organized the first Earth Day, organized it as an international event, which was attended by more than 200 million people from 141 countries. Since then, World Earth Day is celebrated every year with a special theme and it became the world’s largest civic event for environmental protection.
The main objective of World Earth Day is to make people aware of the environmental challenges facing our earth. Issues like climate change, pollution, deforestation, loss of biodiversity and water crisis pose serious threats to the health of our planet and human life. The theme of the year 2024 was “Planet vs. Plastics”.
