सनातन संस्कृति यूँ ही नहीं अनूठी कही जाती है. इस संस्कृति में चाहे दिन हो या रात, दोपहर व संध्या का अपना अलग ही महत्व होता है. वैसे तो इस संस्कृति के अभी नववर्ष की धूम चल रही है. इसी धूम के साथ चैती छठ की शुरुआत भी हो चुकी है. यह पर्व चार दिवसीय होता है जिसके पहले दिन नहाय –खाय मनाया जाता है. उसके दुसरे दिन जिसे खरना कहा जाता है. खरना का अर्थ है ‘शुद्धि’ या ‘पवित्रता’. खरना के दिन व्रती पूरे दिन का निर्जला उपवास रखते हैं. यह व्रतियों के लिए आत्म-संयम और दृढ़ संकल्प का प्रतीक भी माना जाता है.
पहले दिन ‘नहाय-खाय’ के साथ शरीर और मन को शुद्ध करने के बाद, खरना के दिन व्रती पूरे दिन का निर्जला उपवास रखते हैं. दिन-भर उपवास करने के बाद शाम को वे खरना की पूजा करते हैं और फिर प्रसाद ग्रहण करते हैं. व्रत के दौरान व्रती गुड़ और चावल से बनी खीर, गेहूं के आटे से बनी रोटी और केले का प्रसाद बनाते हैं. इस प्रसाद को पूजा के बाद ग्रहण किया जाता है और फिर परिवार के अन्य सदस्य भी इसे प्रसाद के रूप में ग्रहण करते हैं. इस दिन के प्रसाद में पवित्रता और सादगी का विशेष ध्यान रखा जाता है, और इसे मिट्टी के चूल्हे पर आम की लकड़ियों से पकाया जाता है, जिससे प्रसाद की पवित्रता बनी रहती है.
खरना केवल एक भोजन विधि नहीं है, बल्कि इसका गहरा आध्यात्मिक महत्व है. यह दिन व्रतियों को मानसिक और शारीरिक रूप से कठोर तपस्या के लिए तैयार करता है. पूरे दिन निराहार रहने से शरीर शुद्ध होता है और शाम को पवित्र भोजन ग्रहण करने से मन में सकारात्मक ऊर्जा का संचार होता है. यह प्रक्रिया व्रतियों को आने वाले कठिन निर्जला उपवास के लिए शक्ति और संकल्प प्रदान करती है. खरना का भोजन सात्विक और शुद्ध होने के कारण मन को शांति और एकाग्रता प्रदान करता है, जो छठ पूजा के दौरान सूर्य देव और छठी मैया के ध्यान में सहायक होता है. यह दिन परिवार के सदस्यों को एक साथ लाता है और उनमें एकता और प्रेम की भावना को बढ़ाता है.
खरना के बाद व्रती अगले 36 घंटे का कठिन निर्जला व्रत रखते हैं, जो उन्हें सूर्य को अर्घ्य अर्पित करने तक जारी रहता है. खरना का दिन भक्तों के लिए आध्यात्मिक शुद्धि का दिन होता है, जिसमें वे अपने मन, वचन और कर्म को पवित्र रखने का प्रयास करते हैं. यह दिन छठ पूजा के मुख्य अनुष्ठानों में से एक है और इसे बहुत श्रद्धा और समर्पण के साथ मनाया जाता है.

Kharna is not just a food method, but it has deep spiritual significance. This day prepares the devotees mentally and physically for rigorous penance. Staying without food for the whole day purifies the body and consuming holy food in the evening brings positive energy to the mind. This process provides strength and determination to the devotees for the upcoming difficult Nirjala fast. Kharna food being satvik and pure provides peace and concentration to the mind, which helps meditate on Sun God and Chhathi Maiya during Chhath Puja. This day brings family members together and increases the feeling of unity and love in them.
After Kharna, the devotees observe a strict Nirjala fast for the next 36 hours, which continues till they offer arghya to the Sun. The day of Kharna is a day of spiritual purification for the devotees, in which they try to keep their minds, speech and actions pure. This day is one of the main rituals of Chhath Puja and is celebrated with great reverence and devotion.
