सनातन परम्परा बड़ी ही अलौकिक है, इस परम्परा का इतिहास सदियों पुराना है. उसी प्रकार सनातन परम्परा के ग्रन्थ भी अद्वितीय और अलौकिक है. ग्रंथों में लिखे गये श्लोक भी वैज्ञनिक दृष्टिकोण से सौ प्रतिशत सही साबित होते हैं. इस परम्परा के अनुसार हर दिन व हर माह भी अपने आप में अनूठा है. वर्तमान समय में श्रावण का महिना चल रहा है और इस महीने के देवता भगवान भोलेनाथ है. ग्रंथों में त्रिदेव का भी वर्णन आया है. उन त्रिदेव में एक नाम भगवान भोलेनाथ या यूँ कहें कि, महादेव का भी जिक्र आता है. ग्रंथों के अनुसार भगवान भोलेनाथ के नाम की महिमा का वर्णन किया गया है.
बताते चलें कि, वर्ष-23 के इस पावन प्रिय महीने श्रावण में श्रावण का विशेष महत्व है चूंकि, ज्योतिष गणनाओं के अनुसार, श्रावण में अधिक मास का संयोग पूरे 19 साल बाद बना है. इसे मलमास या पुरुषोत्तम मास भी कहा जाता हैं. मलमास तीन साल के बाद बनने वाली तिथियों के योग से बनता है. शिवपुराण के अनुसार भगवान भोलेनाथ के बारे में कहा जाता है कि, कोई भी साधक स्वच्छ दिल से एक लोटा जल चढ़ा दे तो महादेव प्रसन्न हो जाते हैं. वेद के अनुसार भोलेनाथ को ‘रूद्र’ भी कहा जाता है या यूँ कहें कि, जो चेतना के अन्तर्यामी है. इनका एक नाम शिव भी है जिन्हें योगी के रूप में देखे जाते हैं जिनके गले में नाग, हाथ में डमरू और त्रिशूल लिए रहते हैं और इनका निवास स्थान कैलाश है. पौराणिक ग्रंथों के अनुसार शिव को संहार का देवता भी माना जाता है. शिव सभी जीवों को समान दृष्टि से देखते हैं इसीलिए इन्हें महादेव भी कहा जाता है.
भगवान शंकर की पूजा के लिए सोमवार का दिन पुराणों में निर्धारित किया गया है, लेकिन पौराणिक मान्यताओं में भगवान शंकर की पूजा के लिए सर्वश्रेष्ठ दिन महाशिवरात्रि, उसके बाद श्रावण के महीने में आनेवाला प्रत्येक सोमवार, फिर हर महीने आनेवाली शिवरात्रि और सोमवार का महत्व होता है. लेकिन भगवान को श्रावण का महीना बेहद प्रिय है, जिसमें वह अपने भक्तों पर अतिशय कृपा बरसाते हैं. ऐसा माना जाता है कि, दक्ष पुत्री माता सती ने अपने जीवन का त्याग कर कई वर्षो तक शापित जीवन जीया था, फिर हिमालयराज के घर पार्वती के रूप में जन्म लेकर भगवान शिव को पति रूप में पाने के लिए माता पार्वती ने पुरे सावन के महीने कठोर तप कर भगवान शिव को पतिरूप में वरण किया था. अपनी भार्या से पुनःमिलाप के चलते भगवान शिव को ये महीना अतिप्रिय होता है.
ऐसी मान्यता है कि, इस पुरुषोत्तम मास में खासकर सोमवार के दिन व्रत-उपवास और पूजा पाठ (रुद्राभिषेक, कवचपाठ, जाप इत्यादि) का विशेष लाभ होता है. वैसे भी इस पुरुषोत्तम मास का हर दिन अपने आप में अनूठा और अद्वितीय है. सनातन धर्म में यह महीना बेहद ही पवित्र माना जाता है, और यही वजह है कि मांसाहार का सेवन करने वाले लोग भी इस महीने में मांस का परित्याग कर देते है. श्रावण मास में शिव भक्ति का पुराणों में भी उल्लेख मिलता है, पौराणिक कथाओं में वर्णन है कि, इसी महीने में समुद्र मंथन किया गया था. समुद्र मथने के बाद जो विष निकला उसे भगवान शंकर ने कंठ में समाहित कर सृष्टि की रक्षा की, लेकिन विषपान से महादेव का कंठ नीलवर्ण हो गया, इसी से उन्हें नीलकंठ भी कहते हैं. विष के प्रभाव को कम करने के लिए सभी देवी-देवताओं ने उन्हें जल अर्पित किया, इसलिए शिवलिंग पर जल चढ़ाने का खास महत्व होता है. पुरुषोत्तम मास में भोलेनाथ को जल चढ़ाने से विशेष फल की प्राप्ति होती है.
